Caroni Bird Sanctuary

Experience an eco-tour like no other. The Caroni Swamp is the largest mangrove wetland in Trinidad and Tobago and is home to numerous species of birds, reptiles, mammals, and other wildlife. As evening approaches look out for the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago, the Scarlet Ibis, named after its vibrant scarlet color. Evening is when the birds return to the swamp to roost, after feeding during the day, creating a spectacle of color. In addition to the ibis and flamingoes, Caroni is home to 180-plus bird species, including herons, kingfishers and the colorful masked cardinal, depicted on T&T's $50 note, as well as spectacled caiman, Cook's tree boas, crab-eating raccoons and silky anteaters.

You begin with the highlights of the city of Port of Spain including the many historic buildings downtown before arriving at the Queen’s Park Savannah with its Magnificent Seven colonial-style mansions. Drive on the scenic North Coast Road to admire views of the Caribbean Sea, then settle in at Maracas Bay, a sandy beach framed by mountain rainforests. Walk, swim, or relax on the beach (1.5hrs), and even get the chance to taste a typical crispy shark sandwich prepared with homemade bread (cost on own). Board a large flat-bottomed boat to explore the narrow waterways, lined with long “bizarre” mangrove roots. Scroll through the wide-open lagoons with the majestic Northern Range towering in the background…. marvel at the wildlife and most impressively—the bright red colored Scarlet Ibis, Trinidad’s National Bird.
