We did the township tour. It was incredibly impressive. We were highly recommended to do this tour and we would also recommend it to everyone. Please take this tour. Learn all about it directly from the people in the township and understand how it all happened. It is simply unbelievable what has happened and how these people have learned to live. Please visit the local stores and support as much as you can. We got to know this incredible artist and are looking forward to hanging his works. We really appreciated the insight we were given and received a very warm welcome. Please only book through a guide, as the proceeds 1 go to these townships, 2 we create jobs for the people and 3 we want to learn and understand and not judge! We were really impressed with our township tour! Our driver Vuyo gave us excellent background information, including a museum visit, and shared personal stories about living in a township. We then hooked up with local guide Mizo who walked us through Langa township, with loads of opportunities to interact with the friendly and welcoming locals. We really got to experience many aspects of living in the township and hear first hand about life there. There was opportunity to support the community but low pressure. This was a fantastic tour and a must for visitors to understand how 80 percent of the area’s residents live.

Full description
The day either begins at 08.00 or at 13.00, returning approximately four-and-a-half hours later. You will begin in District Six with the Museum (closed Sundays). Here you can educate yourself on the forceful removal of over 60,000 inhabitants in the 1970s by the apartheid regime. This once lively community of former slaves, artisans and merchants was once home to almost 1/10 of the city of Cape Town's population before the brutality that came.
After your education, you will move to Langa, the oldest formal township in South Africa. This suburb was established in 1927, and was established specifically for Black Africans before the apartheid era. There is a history of violent uprisings here, and your visit will be benefited with the local's stories and perspectives. From here we move onto Shebeen (township pub) with the option to taste some traditional beer! How can you turn down a beer with the locals?
If you're fortunate enough to be with us on a Sunday, we'll even have the chance to visit a charismatic church service in the townships! It's truly an experience not to be missed!
