Experience

Highlights
  • Explore the verdant forests at the famous Company's Garden
  • Visit Arderne Gardens, a South African Provincial Heritage Site
  • Take in one of the largest trees in South Africa, the vast Moreton Bay Fig
Full description

Discover a rich variety of flora at the Company’s Garden, first established to provide much-needed nourishment and medicinal herbs for sickly and malnourished seafarers. Feel the history of the gardens that blossomed into a gorgeous botanical site now host to many different influences from Dutch Baroque to Victorian romanticism. See the oldest cultivated tree in South Africa as well as the Rose Garden with its many different species of cultivated roses.   From here, the botanical journey continues to the Arderne Gardens, a South African Provincial Heritage Site. The Gardens – with its shady glades and Japanese-style ponds – has one of the most diverse and valuable collections of exotic trees in South Africa. It officially includes one of the largest trees in South Africa, the vast Moreton Bay Fig. This tree, along with five others were proudly designated Champion Trees.

Our driver/guide Ashley was on time for our pick up. He was very knowledgable about African social and political history as well as about the botanical gardens. The trip included Cecil Rhodes memorial with it spectacular views and we opted for a very interesting 45minutes in the South African museum next to the Company Gardens. We very much enjoyed the tour and would recommend both the tour and our driver/guide Ashley.

Ashley was an excellent guide & did not rush us and even added a visit to Rhodes monument & an hour in the Cape Town Museum (at our cost.) Our suggestion would be that the 9am Kirstenbosch Park cart option (rather than 10am) could be reserved in advance with us guests notified about accepting additional cost. That way overview of the park could be done first with the free time post to explore on our own rather than the reverse.
