Full description
A local food-lover, Faldela Tolker, will be waiting to greet you on the doorstep of her neat, lilac-colored house. She’ll welcome you into her kitchen where a large metal pot simmers on the stove, emitting a spicy aroma. Chef Faldela conducts cooking classes in her home in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town. The food cooked in this predominantly Muslin neighborhood is as piquant as the hot pink and burnt-orange painted houses that rise gently up the lower slopes of Signal Hill, part of Table Mountain. Unique to the Western Cape of South Africa, Cape Malay cuisine fuses African tradition with that of Malaysian and Indonesian slaves, brought over by the Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries. A blend of spices — ginger, fennel, star anise, tamarind, and, most importantly, turmeric — gives the food a distinct aromatic quality. Stews, roasts, and sauce-heavy curries are popular in Malay cuisine, as are meat patties, milk, and bread puddings.

What an awesome experience. Our hostess was friendly, funny, knowledgable and patient. With her guidance we felt confident as we prepared the different dishes amidst lots of laughter. Before we knew it we were sitting down to eat what we had prepared……, but the meal was not over before we were served a plate of koe’sisters… YUMMY. Most definitely an experience not to be missed.

The course itself was great. I was about 15 minutes early. I was received very nicely by your husband and led into the house. Cooking was fun and the food was excellent. Only there was confusion with the date. I had booked the course for December 28th, 2019. However, Faldela had the information on December 29, 2019. Thank God it wasn't a problem for me

De kookworkshop was super! De dame was echt prachtig, super aangenaam mee gebabbeld over de dingen die er toe doen in het leven. Ze zei ook dat ik super goed was in ales van het koken, ze had nog nooit zo snel een kookworkshop gegeven. Ze kon het zeker appreciëren dat ik zo goed luisterde en alles van de eerste keer kon, even mijn ego strelen :)
