Enjoy the drive from Banff in a modern minibus after your friendly guide picks you up from the meeting point. You'll take the scenic drive to Grotto Canyon in Canmore, a local's secret. On arrival at the Grotto Canyon trailhead, your guide will show you how to put on ice cleats over your winter boots, as well as give you some tips on winter hiking.  From here, you'll start the moderate 2.1 kilometer hike along the frozen creek bed through the narrow canyon to the spectacular icefalls. Walk directly on the ice and on the creek bed floor for a unique view of the canyon.  Your guide will point out the stunted pine forest and hidden ancient native pictographs, which were likely created by Hopi visitors from the Arizona region. Learn more about First Nation history in the Bow Valley. Warm up with hot chocolate and maple cookie snack before hiking back.

Embark on a hiking tour by meeting your guide at Rotary Friendship Park. From there, depart on a short 15-minute drive to the trailhead (vehicle required).  Explore the narrow-walled creek bed which twists and turns for many kilometers. Reach a fork in the creek bed as the smooth limestone walls get steeper and steeper. Head right to see a glistening waterfall.  Discover ancient, indigenous pictographs hidden in the cave walls and learn about the history that has almost been lost in time. The tour is offered in the summer and winter.  In the winter, ice cleats and hiking poles are supplied. Exploring the canyon in the winter is a very unique and rewarding experience. Go deep into the canyon with your ice cleats allowing you to go into more unexplored areas.

This tour will begin as you meet your guide at the Canmore Visitor Centre. It will be at this location that you will complete your orientation and sign your waiver and medical forms before convoying for approximately 45 minutes to the trailhead. Getting to the trailhead includes driving maintained compact gravel roads covered in snow, and winter tires are recommended. Once having arrived at the trailhead, you will hike for 3.5 kilometers and ascend 984 feet. Your moderately-difficult tour will eventually end at a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by cliffs from the towering and picturesque Mount Chester. Following this summit, you will return back to the trailhead. From there you will drive back to the tour orientation point.
