Venice: Traveling Opera in a Historic Palace on Grand Canal

8. Venice: Traveling Opera in a Historic Palace on Grand Canal

Experience Italian Opera in one of the most important Venetian-Gothic style palaces in Venice, Palazzo Barbarigo-Minotto. Within this historical venue, an innovative approach to opera has been conceived, with a formula that focuses on the interaction between the singers, the musicians, and the audience. This gives spectators the feeling of living Opera ‘from the inside’. This sensation is amplified by the clever 360-degree use of the ‘stage’ and by having the guests move through 3 different rooms within the Palazzo, one for each act of the show. The whole setting changes, not just the background. Reviving a tradition dating back to the late 1800s, this reimagining is brought to life by some of the finest lyrical voices, accompanied by a talented small group of strings and a piano: a virtuoso ensemble who performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. Opera offered: • La Traviata - Melodrama in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi (Mon - Tue - Thu - Sat) • Il Barbiere di Siviglia - Light-hearted melodrama in two acts by Gioachino Rossini (Wed - Sun) • Rigoletto - Intense drama about love and vengeance by Giuseppe Verdi (Fri)

It was bought by art collector François Pinault and renovated by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Great gondola ride experience! Booking this way makes the process much less stressful because there’s no worry that you’ll have to wait or haggle for pricing. The ride was perfect, a 30-minute loop through some of the smaller canals beginning in the Grand Canal (and it did last the full 30 minutes). We passed by some other gondolas with musicians so that was a nice treat! The meeting point was a little confusing, you have to go to the Alilaguna ticket office, even though that’s not the name of the gondola company—they took our reservation information and created a hand-written voucher and directed us to the correct gondolier. Once we had that we were basically able to hop right onboard, there was no wait. :)

Certainly a very different experience to a normal opera, with only a cast of three on Verdi’s La Traviata it is a shorter version. Overall though this doesn’t distract from some very great performances & it’s literally with the cast a few feet from you in some of the rooms. Definitely I will go again in my next visit, hopefully to catch Rigoletto

It was a a very enjoyable evening the opera was Magnificent set in a beautiful old building each act was set in a different room which made the performance a much more interesting experience all in all a great evening out and a bonus of a glass of Prosecco.

Our guide with Alassandra prior to the Gobdola ride was so captivating and made us appreciate the experience that much more

Vanessa was very interesting and fun. Lots to eat!
