We’ll then leave the square to explore the "città vecchia," or old town, ascending toward the Riccardo Arch, a former gateway to the Roman city. For those who prefer not to walk uphill, an elevator option is available. We will visit the Cathedral of San Giusto, a symbol of Trieste’s religious heritage, adorned with majestic Byzantine mosaics. From its hilltop perch, we will take in panoramic views of the city and delve into the history of World War I at the memorial. As we descend the hill, we’ll arrive at the Roman Theatre, a well-preserved relic from the 1st century AD, offering a fascinating glimpse into Trieste’s ancient past. This place is - strangely - still quite "ignored" by most of the touristy flows, but it represents a real gem of Italy, although geographically isolated from the rest of Italy. During this tour you will explore the most important places, squares and buildings which still represent the symbols of the strong Habsburg domination of this territory. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region, Trieste became indeed the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague). The walking tour will start from Trieste cruise port, from where you'll start your walk towards the wonderful Piazza Unità d'Italia ("square of the Italian unification"), with its stunning view on the sea and its ancient palaces. You will then visit Borgo Teresiano and spot Piazza della Borsa and the theater dedicated to the worldwide famous Giuseppe Verdi. Walk through the pictoresque Canal Grande and continue your visit to the Tergesteo until you reach the elegant Palazzo Gopcevich and Palazzo Scaramagnà. Enter Piazza Ponterosso, the heart of the ancient Borgo Teresiano and walk thorugh Via San Nicolò, while you enjoy its pretty boutique and restaurants. First we will walk along the picturesque Canal Grande and you will discover the history of the palaces and churches that surround it. After that we will see one of the largest synagogues in Europe and I will introduce you to the special coffee culture of Trieste in a historical bar Antico Caffè San Marco. I will take you through the winding streets of the ancient ghetto and show you the amazingly well-preserved Roman theater. From this point we will go to the San Giusto hill on foot or by lift (as you prefer), where we will see the remains of the Roman forum and the Cathedral of San Giusto with its splendid mosaics. On the San Giusto hill we will also visit the lapidarium with Roman antiquities and the tomb of the father of art history, Johann Winckelmann. After going down towards the old town passing by the ancient Arco di Riccardo we will come to the solemn ensemble of the Piazza Unità d'Italia, the largest square overlooking the sea in Europe. At the end of our walk we will stroll along the embankment, enjoy the panorama of the hills and, if desired, visit the Italian food court Eataly pausing over a glass of wine or aperitivo.
