On the tour, our guide was a very knowledgeable older gentlemen who talked about the influence of religion on the world, especially in England. I am not somebody who is religious but found myself very interested in what he had to say. The pace of the tour was very comfortable and our guide spoke very clearly so everything was very nice. It was a shame we couldn’t visit the colleges because it was exam season but that was explained in the package before hand. If you are planning to visit Cambridge, i do recommend booking a short tour because i have tried going solo and planing a trip for oxford and found that without a local guide, we only took pictures and learnt nothing (it was also a bit boring), which is a shame because the history of both cities were so rich. So do book a short tour and then do your own thing.

Full description

We love Cambridge, and believe that the best way to experience it is on foot with a guide who appreciates its treasures. We’ve been leading our acclaimed Round Church guided walks for over 25 years, and work with a dedicated team of local guides to bring you a small-group walking experience which is personal, engaging and unforgettable.

Our approach is a little different from a standard tourist tour: we believe that ideas matter, and focus on how a small number of big ideas have shaped the university over eight eventful centuries.

Through stories about famous Cambridge alumni like Isaac Newton, William Wilberforce and John Milton, we explore subjects such as the emergence of the university from Christian monasteries, the Protestant Reformation, the development of modern science, movements for the rule of law and religious freedom, and the campaign to abolish the British slave trade.

Join us on a walk to see just how much Cambridge’s story of saints, sinners, sceptics, and scholars has to say to us today.

Walking tours meet inside the Round Church at 2:15pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. They last 90-120 minutes.

Includes

  • Guided walking tour with an expert local guide
  • Entrance to the Round Church, including an exhibition and 23-minute film (subject to opening times)
  • Small group experience, with maximum 15 people in total
  • Visits to key historical sites in Cambridge (please note that the itinerary provides an example of a standard tour but the route may vary slightly)
  • Entrance to approximately 2 colleges (subject to college opening availability)

Know before you go

  • The tour involves walking at a moderate to fast pace. The route is pushchair accessible but not wheelchair accessible.
  • Children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • Dogs are welcome but, due to college restrictions, visitors with dogs will need to remain outside any colleges visited.
  • A walk may need to be cancelled if fewer than two people sign up.
  • Walks meet inside the Round Church Visitor Centre - upon arrival please come inside the Round Church and check in at the welcome desk.
  • Tours last 90-120 minutes.
  • Please note that tours will not be able to enter colleges during University exam term (late April to the end June).
