Colonia : Tour Barrio Sur UNESCO World Heritage Site with a local guide

The Barrio Sur of Colonia del Sacramento was recognized as a Historic District at the end of the 1960s and as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995. This tour is the result of a process of material and symbolic revaluation associated with a national and global historical context, archaeological findings of the colonial era and the reconstruction-restoration of historical symbols such as the wall, and heritage narratives. As a result, there was a change in the way of living: many houses went from being dwellings to commercial premises, lodgings, restaurants and museums, resulting in a population emptying and exclusion of the intangible heritage and its identity, being nowadays a scenographic neighborhood and the main entrance door for tourists to Uruguay. During this tour guide born in the place, you will be able to appreciate the transformation process of a popular and socially marginalized neighborhood, to an exclusive tourist center recognized worldwide. In this guided walk, you will discover unique details that only those who lived it could tell you. Do not miss the part of history that does not appear in books, in this unique and fascinating experience.

The tour of Colonia’s historic quarter was fantastic — a real highlight of my trip. It was well-paced and filled with fascinating details about the city’s colonial history, architecture, and cultural influences. I learned a lot and came away with a much deeper appreciation for the area. Adrian was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the history, which made the experience even more engaging!

5 out of 5 stars

Adri was really accommodating as was the tour company as we missed our ferry and got there very late. Very good communication. Colonia is a beautiful place to visit and Adri was also so good at taking photos. What started as a day full of mishaps where we thought we would have to cancel the whole thing ended perfectly thanks to the help of the tour organizers and Adri

I had a great time and learned a lot on this bike tour: history, legends, fun facts. Adrian was a fantastic guide!! He had an answer to ALL of my questions and even added statistics. On this Saturday morning, we were the first in the old town - before the crowds came. Great timing! Bikes were in good shape.
