Driving from San Francisco to LA: A Pacific Coast Highway adventure
Driving from San Francisco to LA: A Pacific Coast Highway adventure

The scenic drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles is a dream adventure. The two cities are connected by Highway 1, aka the Pacific Coast Highway, which hugs the California coastline from Mendocino County in the north to Orange County in the south. The stretch from SF to LA crosses the Golden Gate Bridge and passes award-winning vineyards, ancient forests, and picturesque beaches. By design, Highway 1 gives you incredible ocean views from start to finish.

At almost 500 miles, around 10-12 hours of driving are involved, but it would be a waste to do it all in a day with so much to see en route. Beyond natural attractions like Big Sur and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, there are old-school food stands and famous restaurants, national landmarks, wildlife hotspots and butterfly sanctuaries, modern art destinations, incredible hikes, and eccentric oddities. Slow down, book a few overnight stays along the way, and take it all in.

How long will this road trip take?

You could complete this trip in three days, but five will allow you to take in more of the sights. The total driving time is around 12 hours.

What are the highlights?

This is a great road trip for food and nature lovers, thanks to the many state parks, wildlife havens, and iconic Californian institutions you’ll find on the way. If you want to discover California’s wine regions south of SF, schedule a non-driving day or two, too.

What are the main attractions along the way?

The Golden Gate Bridge, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Monterey Bay Aquarium, redwood forests, Big Sur, wine regions, trails, and off-road adventures.

Ready for the road trip of a lifetime? Here are the Highway 1 highlights.

The best things to do in San Francisco
The best things to do in San Francisco

San Francisco is the original contrarian of America’s cities. It’s still chilly in July, it’s progressive yet libertarian, and it’s one of the finest cities in the country for dining — but you can’t get a meal after 9:00 PM. Oh, and yes, Zuni Café is as incredible as everyone says.

But to ignore San Francisco’s weirdness would be to turn a blind eye to what makes it a deeply fascinating place and an enjoyable city to explore. The 47-square-mile peninsula that sticks like a thumb into the Pacific Ocean and its namesake bay is steeped in the dramatic. Likely any traveler to SF, as the natives call it (never San Fran!), has heard about its woes. And for the most part, the rumors merit; yet, SF is oh-so-textured and has deeply absorbed every historical iteration. Each cultural scene has left its footprint on the city, often resulting in distinct neighborhoods brimming with requisite samplings of the many global communities represented (even the fleece-vested tech geeks).

To spend a little time in each of them is to discover the city’s rich tapestry, or some might call it a patchwork. Some places are more polished or interesting or rare than others, but wherever you go, there’s always something wonderful to see or do.

Driving from San Francisco to Yosemite: iconic city meets incomparable nature
Driving from San Francisco to Yosemite: iconic city meets incomparable nature

There’s nary a land more beautiful than Northern California — something locals know and have celebrated for centuries. From the dramatic craggy coastline to the rolling hills of Sonoma and Napa to the Redwood and Sequoia-filled forests, and, hello, Yosemite, the counties north of San Francisco are a natural wonderland unique to its place. The best way to explore this expansive territory? It has to be a road trip.

And so, there are many iconic road trips (we don’t use that term lightly) through California, and allowing up to 10 days offers quite the possibilities. What to do? Plot your way from San Francisco to Yosemite. But, please, don’t choose the shortest route. No disrespect to Modesto or Stockton (or any other city on Highway 99), but when a trip can lead you to the sea, the sunshine, and the vines, dusty 1980s strip malls and suburban sprawl really don’t make a case for themselves, do they? Instead, from Marin to Sonoma and Napa on the Pacific, to Sacramento and the Gold Rush towns, to Yosemite (with options to head north to Tahoe or Sequoia National Forest) is the way to go.

How long will this road trip take?

Google Maps will tell you that Yosemite National Park is around 170 miles from San Francisco, about a 4-hour drive, but that would be a huge waste. Instead, take a few days (four nights is perfect) to take in the views, landmarks, charming towns, parks, and wine along the way. That morning drive suddenly becomes a week-long, breathtaking adventure.

What are the highlights?

Boomtowns from the Gold Rush, the state capital, Wine Country, redwood forests, stunning views, and, of course, the has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed Yosemite.

What are the main attractions along the way?

The Golden Gate Bridge, wildlife and seafood in Bodega Bay, wine tasting in Napa Valley, mud baths in Calistoga, Michelin-starred meals in Yountville, and river cruises in Sacramento.

San Francisco: California Sunset/SF City Lights Cruise

During the winter months, our California Sunset Cruise transforms into the San Francisco City Lights Cruise. As the sun sets earlier, the city comes alive with twinkling lights, offering a stunning backdrop of illuminated landmarks. Whether you’re enjoying the glowing sunsets of summer or the cozy charm of winter, this cruise promises unforgettable views. Along the way, view numerous National Historic landmarks and San Francisco sights, including Coit Tower, the Transamerica Pyramid, St. Peter, Paul's Church, and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. After the sun sets, the city comes to life, and this 2-hour cruise offers a front-row seat to the iconic landmarks of the Bay, all illuminated against the night sky. On your way back to Fisherman’s Wharf, see many more famous sights, including the Presidio, the Marina District, and Fort Mason.
