Explore the ruins of the former Egyptian capital of Tanis, and the engineering marvel of the Suez Canal on a full-day tour to the Nile Delta from Cairo. Stop at the small town of Zagazig to see the ruins of the Ancient Egyptian city of Bubastis.
What to Expect
Visit the ruins of the former Egyptian city of Tanis in the north-eastern Nile Delta on this full-day tour from Cairo. Thought to have been founded during the late 20th Dynasty, Tanis became the northern capital of Egypt during the 21st Dynasty (1077-943 BC) and was the home city of its founding pharaoh, Smendes.
The city remained Egypt's political capital into the 22nd Dynasty, and was an important commercial and strategic city until it was threatened with inundation by Lake Manzala in the 6th-Century AD. When it was finally abandoned, the refugees founded the nearby city of Tennis.
You will leave Cairo in the early morning, driving via the agricultural road to Tanis, the delta capital of Ramses II. Pass the small town of Zagazig and the ruins of Bubastis, where cats were worshiped during Ancient Egyptian times.
Continue to the ruins of Tanis. The site of numerous archaeological digs by Flinders Petrie and Auguste Mariette in the 19th-Century, Tanis has inspired adventure storytellers and movie makers, most notably H. Rider Haggard and the film of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
Proceed to Ismailia on the Suez Canal, where you will enjoy a break for lunch. Founded in 1863 during the construction of the canal, the city is known to Egyptians as “The City of Beauty and Enchantment." It still boasts a number of buildings dating from British and French involvement with the canal, and a low-key tourist atmosphere that you can enjoy at a relaxed pace.
At the end of the 9-hour tour, the return to Cairo will be via the desert road, providing an alternative landscape to your outward journey.
