Overview
Explore Islamic Cairo, the part of central Cairo noted for its historically important mosques and other Islamic monuments. Overlooked by the Citadel of Saladin, visit the Ali Alabaster Mosque, Al Gowhara Palace, Ibn Tulun Mosque, and more.
What to Expect
Learn about Islamic life in Egypt on this 7-hour private tour with an expert Egyptologist. You will see many of Cairo’s major attractions associated with Islam, including the Ali Alabaster Mosque, Ibn Tulun Mosque, and Citadel of Saladin.

You will also visit the dramatic Hanging Church, thought to have sheltered Joseph, Mary, and the Baby Jesus after their arrival in Egypt.

Following a hotel pick-up in central Cairo, a private Egyptologist guide will take you to the Citadel of Saladin, constructed by Salah El Din on the Moqattam hills in 1183 AD, in order to defend Cairo from the Crusaders.

Islamic Cairo was founded in 969 AD, as the royal enclosure for the Fatimid caliphs, while the economic and administrative capital was in nearby Fustat, established by Arab military commander 'Amr ibn al-'As.

After Fustat was destroyed in 1168-1169, the administrative capital of Egypt moved to Cairo, where it has remained ever since. It took the General Jawhar Al Sikilli 4 years to build Old Cairo, and for the Fatimid Calif Al Muizz to leave his old Mahdia in Tunisia and settle in the new capital in Egypt.

As well as sites of Islamic significance, you will explore attractions of significance to Cairo’s Coptic Christians, such as the dramatic 3rd-Century Saint Virgin Mary's Orthodox Church, also known as the Hanging Church, or El Muallaqa. One of the oldest, and most famous Coptic churches in Egypt, it was named for its superb location above a gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress, and is approached via 29 steps. Early travelers dubbed it the “Staircase Church.“

You will also visit the Abu Serga Church of Coptic Cairo, believed to have been built on the spot where Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus rested at the end of their journey into Egypt.

End your tour with a visit to the treasury collection at the Coptic Museum, which contains the largest collection of Egyptian Christian artifacts in the world.
