Wander through galleries that contain more than165,000 artifacts. Among the many highlights are the treasures of the child King Tutankhamen. The no-classical museum building was designed by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon to house masterpieces from the per-dynastic to the pharaonic and greece-roman periods.

Proceed to Mohamed Ali alabaster mosque, and the Citadel of Salah El Din, where you will learn more about Islamic Cairo. The citadel was fortified by the Ayyubid ruler Salah El-Din (Saladin) between 1176 and 1183 CE, as protection against the crusaders. A few years after defeating the Fatimid caliphate, Saladin set out to build a wall that would surround both Cairo and Fustat.

Built on a promontory beneath the Muqattam hills, a setting that made it difficult to attack, the efficacy of the Citadel’s location is further demonstrated by the fact that it remained the heart of Egyptian government until the 19th-Century.

Continue to old Cairo Or Coptic Cairo which is unique area that has a concentration of christian churches that date from the centuries between the decline of the Pharaonic religion and the arrival of Islam when Egypt had a christian majority. Coptic Cairo is largely built around the fort of Babylon and upon the remains of its walls.

The churches of St. Sergius (Abu Serga) dating back to the 4th century, it is traditionally believed to have been built on the spot where the holy family, Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus Christ, rested at the end of their journey into Egypt. They may have lived here while Joseph worked at the fortress.
