Top sights in Cairns
Cairns is in the north of the Australian state of Queensland. The area surrounding the city is a natural paradise - there's the Great Barrier Reef, for one thing - so here are a few exhilarating sights you can check out during a visit to the area.
Take a boat over to Green Island, where you can stop off and go swimming. Experience the unreal coral colors and stunning wildlife of the reef, illuminated by the sun.
You may not be able to delve 20,000 leagues under the sea, but you can go snorkeling, which is pretty close! Here's your chance to be a mermaid or merman for a couple of hours.
Enjoy this lush tropical rainforest on the ground, or fly over it on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. You can also seamlessly glide from land to water in an amphibious vehicle!
Experience the culture of the Aboriginal Djabugay people. Enjoy a didgeridoo show, visit a museum with ancient murals, try some Djabugay cuisine, and learn to throw a boomerang.
Take a day to explore the Outback and walk around under a volcano - that's not something you get to do every day!
The Tully River hosted the 1991 Australian Canoe and White Water Rafting Championships. Don't worry, though, you're not alone, as each boat holds seven people.
Owing to its near-equatorial location, Northern Australia is very hot all year round. Make sure to wear cool, cotton clothing, stay hydrated, and definitely layer up on sunscreen and a hat.
Before your trip, consult your doctor about injections you may need to get. If you are walking around in the rainforest, be sure to bring mosquito repellent - ideally purchased locally, as creams from back home may not be suitable for the climate.
For extreme sports like white water rafting, it's essential. There can also be an age limit, so if you happen to be under 18, do check in advance if you need to have a parent or guardian with you.

What people are saying about Cairns
We enjoyed the Mamu Tropical Skywalk and the audio tour was very good. It is an easy walk and a must to climb the tower at the end to see awesome views across the rainforest and valley below. The walk takes approx an hour. We also enjoyed Paronella Park. Take the free guided tour as you hear about the history of the Paronella family, the castles and Park. A good experience you will not find anywhere else.
The tour was flawless. Thomas, the guide, was super helpful on the day as we couldn't get our meal options registered online. The information and local knowledge presented by Thomas gave context and perspective to the beauty that is Mossman, Daintree and Cape Tribulation. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our time and the tour, we will be recommending this to our friends and family!
Was awesome and a great experience! Andy & (sorry forgot his name but another legend who loves TKMaxx as much as me) looked after a small group of us. Great for all ages. Loved it so much we're coming back with some mates to do the white water rafting run by their sister company. :)
Awesome day out, accompanied by an excellent tour guide. Would recommend the trip as there was many sights to behold, tasty sandwiches and great conversations....not forgetting the ice cream on the way. Be prepared to be exhausted by the end of the trip. Thank you to our guide Lisa!
Loved it. If you get sea sick definitely recommend a nausea tablet before hand. There were a couple people sick but other than that the whole thing was amazing. Definitely recommend.
