Top sights in Cairns
Cairns is in the north of the Australian state of Queensland. The area surrounding the city is a natural paradise - there's the Great Barrier Reef, for one thing - so here are a few exhilarating sights you can check out during a visit to the area.
Take a boat over to Green Island, where you can stop off and go swimming. Experience the unreal coral colors and stunning wildlife of the reef, illuminated by the sun.
You may not be able to delve 20,000 leagues under the sea, but you can go snorkeling, which is pretty close! Here's your chance to be a mermaid or merman for a couple of hours.
Enjoy this lush tropical rainforest on the ground, or fly over it on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. You can also seamlessly glide from land to water in an amphibious vehicle!
Experience the culture of the Aboriginal Djabugay people. Enjoy a didgeridoo show, visit a museum with ancient murals, try some Djabugay cuisine, and learn to throw a boomerang.
Take a day to explore the Outback and walk around under a volcano - that's not something you get to do every day!
The Tully River hosted the 1991 Australian Canoe and White Water Rafting Championships. Don't worry, though, you're not alone, as each boat holds seven people.
Owing to its near-equatorial location, Northern Australia is very hot all year round. Make sure to wear cool, cotton clothing, stay hydrated, and definitely layer up on sunscreen and a hat.
Before your trip, consult your doctor about injections you may need to get. If you are walking around in the rainforest, be sure to bring mosquito repellent - ideally purchased locally, as creams from back home may not be suitable for the climate.
For extreme sports like white water rafting, it's essential. There can also be an age limit, so if you happen to be under 18, do check in advance if you need to have a parent or guardian with you.

What people are saying about Cairns
Everything was exceptional - the trip, the staff, the dive, the food. The staff were friendly, helpful and informative. The dive was A+; I'm not a huge fan of the water so huge gratitude to Simon who was patient, kind and understanding with his instructions and showed me a whole new beautiful world. I love how passionate the team was about what they do and the eco aspect about the Great Barrier Reef - props to Russell for his dry sense of humour and extensive knowledge. Shout-out to Kirsty for being so fast and efficient; and Phoebe for her bubbly and helpful personality. The Great Barrier Reef may be beautiful, but those who care for it and are able to extend their passion and knowledge to others, really elevated this trip.
it was a beautiful get away with my partner, i really enjoyed the relaxing and time in the water. The staff were phenomenal, one even spent the whole time in the water with us helping find really cool things in the ocean and even get a picture with nemo! shoutout to him, awesome bloke and very knowledgeable, it made the experience that much more memorable knowing more about the coral and animals we were seeing in the ocean.
The guided tour was excellent. There was nothing our guide did not know about eco systems and fish. Would highly recommend the tour but the drinks and dinner were just icing. Great night.
Great day seeing many beautiful sites, made so easy, all we had to do was be ready at the pick up time, decide what we wanted for lunch and everyrhing else was taken care of for us.
Husband and I had fantastic time and the crew they were absolutely the best right from the beginning to the end...as for the reef it was absolute amazing and breath taking....
