Macao Beach: Buggy Safari and Cenote Swimming with Pickup

3. Macao Beach: Buggy Safari and Cenote Swimming with Pickup

There are few better ways to see the unspoilt Dominican countryside than a Terracross safari. You'll drive through winding rural dirt tracks through plantations all the way to the famous Domitai Cave Park and a replica Taino village. Luis, one of our local guides, says, ‘We are the world's largest producer of organic, fair trade cocoa. Around half of our cocoa is made into the finest chocolate you can buy. So, trying traditional cocoa products in a Dominican farm is a real treat, even if you don't have a sweet tooth.' Kick off with some mud-splattered, high-octane fun as you ride cross-country to a cenote cave for a swim in the Domitai Cave Park. These sinkholes with clear, fresh water are perfect for a cooling dip. As it's a private venue, there are fewer crowds and vendors than at other cenotes. You'll also get to savour some local specialities such as empanadas and pineapple wine. Next, drop by a recreated Taino village – they were the aborigines who lived on the island before Columbus arrived – where you'll observe a folkloric show. Plus, you'll learn all about the production of local crops which are so critical to the local economy – coconut oil, sugarcane, coffee and chocolate as well as the unique Dominican chocolate tea. During your visit you'll have the chance to try some of these local products, along with the national tipple, mamajuana. Overall, a great close-up view of the Dominican countryside and local culture – on a thrilling Terracross safari.

From La Romana Cruise ship port: Visit of Saona Island

4. From La Romana Cruise ship port: Visit of Saona Island

Join us for an unforgettable excursion to the stunning island of Saona! We will be waiting for you in Bayahibe, where our family-friendly motorized catamaran set off. Our first stop is at the iconic Penon rock formation, where our knowledgeable English-speaking guide will share fascinating insights into the history and culture of this area, including tales of the indigenous Taino people who once called it home. From there, we'll pass upon the mesmerizing mangrove forest - a wonderland of vibrant red mangroves that grow directly out of saltwater. Finally, we arrive at Saona Island itself! Our first port-of-call is Mano Juan village; here you can explore on foot and discover what life is like on a tropical paradise island. See colorful houses, local shops and meet some friendly locals along the way. As part of our visit to this idyllic location, we also have an opportunity to see a turtle nursery project run by a local family. They care for incubating eggs during nesting season and release baby turtles back into their natural habitat upon hatching (please note that sightings are dependent on seasonal factors). After working up an appetite exploring Mano Juan village, enjoy lunch with breathtaking views over Saona beach from one of our favorite restaurants serving delicious traditional Dominican cuisine. Fresh lobster* is available in season (from July 1st until February 29th) at $25 USD per person. Following lunchtime relaxation or snorkeling at Playa del Toro – arguably one of Saona's most enchanting beaches- we make our way towards La Piscina Natural (the famous natural pool). Here you can admire huge starfish while swimming in shallow waters - but please remember not to touch them! As your day draws to a close with memories made forevermore etched in your mind; return back to Bayahibe port where transportation awaits to take you back safely to La Romana Cruise port.

Fantastic trip with lots to absorb, really well paced and feel like this day will be one to remember for many years. The guide offered valuable insights and we really felt like we got a taste of the Dominican lifestyle and culture. The sights were incredible, our Gopro stayed warm throughout the trip! Make sure that you leave some tips to the horseriding assistants, they work really hard! (and perhaps avoid making the mistake of bringing British pounds as they have never seen that before)...

Tour with the glass bottom boat is quite nice, unfortunately you hardly see any fish :( (ok, nobody can do anything about it). Short stop at the dolphins - unfortunately they are not kept in tanks that are too small :/ The Scubadoo tour was really nice, albeit very short :)

It is definitely worth it. Even though I have fear from deep water the guys took good care of us and made me feel safe. I would recommend this experience.

Was a very long day. The buses weren’t the newest, but our guide was very informative. And the horses are actually mules.

Great experience I will highly recommend you try this
