Full description

Enjoy a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, the first site in Uruguay to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the city with a round-trip ferry ticket from Buenos Aires to Colonia city. Select from options that include a walking tour, a teahouse visit, and a winery tour.

Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese Manuel Lobo, the city went from Portuguese to Spanish rule several times until the Declaration of Independence in 1825. Discover how these events made the city a melting pot of architectural styles where Spanish and Portuguese-style buildings coexist.

Walk down cobbled streets and enjoy the unique landscape with spectacular views of the Rio de la Plata. Experience the charming houses, cobbled streets, traditional lanterns, and magical sunsets of El Porton de Campo alongside the Street of Sighs and Faro.

If you choose the option that includes the walking tour, your guide will be waiting for you at the ferry station, ready to tell you all about the history of this incredible town. Return to Buenos Aires via the same ferry route at the end of your day trip.

Get Your Guide was definitely the most economical way to visit Colonia. However, when selecting your return, give serious thought to which ferry to schedule. I realized after we arrived in Colonia that we did not want to return after dark, and had to pay full ferry price to return earlier. The ferry takes 1.5 hours to cross, plus being at the station 60-90 minutes prior takes up a lot of the day. The walking tour was very nice and informative. We enjoyed the day, but would have planned less time there. Also be aware that businesses in Uruguay do not accept Argentina peso. USD and Euro are okay.

Easy check-in and immigration. Just showed our tour confirmation e-mail, passport and vaccine card. Nice hour + ferry ride. The tour was interesting and we had plenty of free time to explore Colonia. We were at the terminal at 9:15 for the 10:30 departure and it was easy to get a window seat. Came home on the 6:00 pm ferry.

In general it was well run. The boarding on the Uruguayan side is more chaotic. If you use a credit card in a restaurant there is currently a promotion that reverses the 22% tax which is very nice. It only works in restaurants and hotels. We rented a golf cart for two hours and it was great fun. I would definitely suggest that. The walking tour was very nice. Then we had lunch rented a golf cart had a snack and our time was up. You can bring a bathing suit and swim at the beach. Many people were swimming and it looked like fun. A good way to cool down on a hot day.
