Full description
Hollókő has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.The village's 67 protected buildings are characteristic peasant houses from the 17th-19th centuries, and the site is an outstanding example of a deliberately preserved traditional settlement. This village is a living example of rural life before the agricultural revolution of the 20th century. The 400 residents of this village are Palóc, and in addition to their special dialect, they retain their folk traditions, crafts, songs, and richly decorated, colorful folk costumes. On this full-day tour from Budapest you’ll be taken back in time to see how people lived in a rural village. Meet residents in Palóc costumes, see a folk dance, watch craftsmen at work, and visit the Village Museum and the Doll Museum. You’ll also taste some regional food made in the Palóc way, as the tour includes a stop for lunch. If you can arrange it, the best time to visit Hollókő is at Easter, when special programs and Easter traditions await! Sometimes colorful Palóc weddings are held as well. If you’re interested you can inquire about dates and special offers.

A Tourist Trap. Misleading Tour Description. Complete Waste of Money!

I booked this tour imagining I & my family could spend a day of culture, intermingling with traditional people. But how this tour turned out, especially after traveling so far by road from/to Budapest was a nightmare! Except for glorious country views from a ruined castle, cheese tasting & watching 1 modern leather smith at work. We saw nothing else at all at Holloko! No people in costumes, no dances or culture shows, most museums were closed, the streets were lined with modern cars so ‘authentic’ photos of the heritage town was impossible! We had to walk for hours and contend with small cafes & tourist shops selling almost the same merchandise, run by people in modern clothes! This expensive tour doesn’t include entrances to the site plus though the tour description says you spend half a day touring-it can’t be farther from the truth! The tour company should have checked in advance on the workings of everything at Holloko before selling this tour, ditto for the Holloko ticket office!
