Full description

Explore a part of the network of underground tunnels under Castle Hill with your guide. Learn more about the history and role of the cave tunnels and their geology.

Admire the natural limestone and the manpower that went into creating this labyrinth cave system. Meet for the cave tour either at Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér) or for the shorter tour option at Dárda Street, where you enter the Buda Castle underground cave system.

After a short introduction, you will start your tour and learn about the history of the labyrinth-like of the cave system which once served as wine cellars, bomb shelters, and even a medieval prison.

Admire the natural limestone caverns and the 800-year-old man-made cellars in one of the most unique caves of Hungary.

The tour is a journey through time during where you will be able to learn a lot about not only the geology of the Buda Castle but also about the combined work of man and nature throughout many centuries.

The castle area cave tour was amazing! Surprised to hear it has only been running since 2019, we felt very lucky. Vicky, our guide was exceptional - very knowledgeable & fun! The caves are vast & extensive - you wouldn't believe all those huge buildings are built on top of them. Lots of interesting facts along the way. You can see why they're called a labyrinth though - you wouldn't want to get lost down there after dark! Did think it should possibly be done with a slightly smaller group though? We were a group of 24 and occasionally you missed the start of the info in certain areas if you were trailing at the back of the group.

Great tour and our guide was great. The price was right but I would have been happier pay it double for a smaller group size as we spent a good amount of time waiting for guests to pile into rooms. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting the castle district.

If you go to Budapest without doing this tour, YOU HAVE MADE A HUGE MISTAKE! In the short hour you will have your mind blown over and over and it costs next to nothing. Guide was super cool and full of knowledge? Getting yourself a ticket is an absolute no-brainer. We felt so lucky to have this opportunity--especially since the caves only reopened in 2019 after decades of being closed--and it was one of our highlights of our weeks-long trip through Europe. Do it and tell all your friends. Budget plenty of time to get up the hill to the meeting point.
