What to Expect
Explore 2 countries in 2 days on a 2-day sightseeing tour that takes in Romania’s cosmopolitan capital and, by way of contrast, the historic rock monasteries of the Rusenski Lom river valley. Wander the parks, gardens and tree-lined streets of Bucharest, discovering Communist monuments and Art Deco buildings. Then, drive by air-conditioned minivan to the city of Ruse in northeast Bulgaria, and learn about the monastic settlements of the Black Sea coast.

Day 1: Bucharest City Tour
Today you will explore Bucharest, once described as the “Paris of the East,” before falling to Communist rule under Ceaușescu, and emerging once more into democracy after the Romanian Revolution of 1989.

Traveling by air-conditioned minivan, see sights such as Parliament Palace, the 2nd largest building in the world after the Pentagon. Learn about Romanian architecture through the ages, both urban and rural, at the open-air Village Museum. Go to the domed Athenaeum, a city landmark and concert hall, and see the Arcul de Triumf, built in 1936 to replace the original wooden monument to Romanian independence built in the 19th century.

During the 1930s Bucharest’s tree-lined boulevards and architecture gave rise to its “Little Paris” nickname, and today the city is full of parks and gardens and surrounded by lakes and forests.

Day 2: Rock Monasteries and Ruse City Tour
The 2nd day of your tour takes you across the border to Bulgaria, where you will visit the Basarbovski Rock Monastery of St. Dimitrius Basarbovski in the valley of the Rusenski Lom river. Located near the village of Basarbovo, 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the city of Ruse, it is the only active rock monastery remaining in Bulgaria.

Continue to the rock monastery of St. Archangel Michael (The Buried Church), located within the borders of the Rusenski Lom Natural Park at Ivanovo. A stair system in the rocks provides access to the various churches and chapels, where 13th and 14th century frescoes can be spied.

Return to Ruse for a walk in the historical center of Bulgaria’s 5th largest city, located on the right bank of the River Danube. Your city tour includes lunch, where you can savor traditional Bulgarian flavors.
