Full description
You’ll depart Bucharest at 08:00 for a drive across the Danube River on this full-day excursion to Bulgaria. The Danube is the second-longest river in Europe, and the King of all Rivers, according to Napoleon. After passing the city of Ruse you’ll come to a remote area that’s home to the Ivanovo churches. Part of the UNESCO since 1979, the rock-hewn churches feature stunning frescos dating to the 13th and 14th centuries. The churches are located in the beautiful valley of the Rusenski Lom River. The tour continues on to Bulgaria’s most beautiful city, Veliko Tarnovo, also known also as the City of the Tsars. Located on the banks of the Yantra River, Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, and was one of the strongest fortifications in the area. In the old town, the fortress is the most impressive attraction. Walk along the streets of the old town and the alleyways of the Tsarevets Palace. Visit the former patriarchal church, rebuilt in modern times, admire other examples of the period’s architecture, and take in the panoramic views. Arbanassi, quite near Veliko Tarnovo, is a small, quaint village with a medieval atmosphere. Enjoy a stroll along its centuries-old streets and admire the beautiful houses.

Excellent one-day introduction to Bulgarian history & landscapes!

Sergan got us from Bucharest to Bulgaria and back in one speedy but attractions-packed day. Safe driver; excellent guide and great lunch recommendation. Loved the stops at Ivanovo cave frescoes and Veliko Tarnovo. Highly recommend if you're in Bucharest and want to squeeze in a quick taste of nearby Bulgaria.

Great potential for a day-trip to rock-hewn monastery & Veliko Tarnovo

As I said, great potential for the above day-trip. They need to fix-up the roadway and parking area, and possibly add an external elevator to the rock-hewn monastery. It is a very interesting site, but it needs a bit of up-dating and some improvements. I'm sure it will be very popular one day in the not to distant future. And the old town area of Veliko Tarnovo is very attractive, and again there is great potential for a day-time visit and possibly a lunch at a good, little restaurant in the old town, as part of the package price. This old town built in this river gorge has some wonderful viewpoints. These 2 destinations were enough for me and my driver/guide returned me to my hotel in Bucharest at around 5:30 p.m. The day was long enough what with the border crossing and with the distance to Veliko Tarnovo. I didn't really discover "Bulgaria" but this short introduction to Bulgaria was more than enough for a satisfying day-trip. Hope to do it again someday & note the changes.
