Best things to do in Bucharest
The "Little Paris" label may have been shredded by decades of war and oppression, but the Romanian capital's rich culture is thriving once again. Bucharest today is open and green – a place where tradition partners with modern life! Here's what to see and do.
1. Romanian Athenaeum
Inside and out, this spectacular concert hall makes for one of Bucharest's top sights. See the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra perform beneath its beautifully frescoed dome!
2. Palace of the Parliament
This controversial building was built under the tyrannical reign of Nicolae Ceaușescu to become the world's largest parliament complex. The Palace of the Parliament is as breathtaking as it is despised!
3. National Museum of Romanian History
Romania's premier collection of important artifacts spans all of history. If you have time, visit the eccentric postal museum, also located in the National Museum of Romanian History!
4. National Museum of Art of Romania
Though clumsily named, Romania's national gallery isn't limited to just the foremost collection of Romanian art. Situated in the old Royal Palace, it's one of the city's top cultural attractions!
5. Triumph Arch
Any tour of Bucharest should reveal plenty of aesthetic comparisons with Paris, but perhaps nowhere are the similarities more evident than at Romania's own Arc de Triomphe!
6. Herastrau Park
Come spring, summer, or fall, visit the Herastrau Park to ride old-fashioned fairground attractions, rent a boat, or simply wander through every beautifully landscaped corner!
7. Museum of the Romanian Peasant
With its carefully curated display of artifacts from Romanian peasant life, the Museum of the Romanian Peasant, a former European Museum of the Year, is perhaps the city's most modest sightseeing essential.
Planning Your Visit
How many days?
2 or 3 nights will probably be enough in Bucharest, but why not stay a little longer to enjoy day trips to Romania's nearby historic sites? Sinaia, Brasov, and Transylvannia are all unmissable!
Where to stay?
Most of Bucharest's tourist attractions and sights are located downtown, as are its best places to eat and drink. Of the 3 squares there, Universitatii is the most pleasant for visitors. There is also Unirii Square, which is the shopping district, and Romana Square is well-connected though more residential.

What people are saying about Bucharest
My tour guide was Rodica and the driver was Cristian. They were perfectly on time for the pick up at mg Hotel. Radical LOOOOVES her job - you'll be able to tell. She is a very good guide with lots of side knowledge about the country and city. There was no question that she couldn't answer me, haha! Both the driver and guide speak perfectly fluent english. Very educational and you'll be surprised by the Peleş Castle. It's a little beauty. The tour started at 8am and I was dropped off at my Hotel at 9pm (due to bad traffic we were back a little later than expected! Cristian and Rodica did their best to get us back to the Hotel earlier. Took an alternative, faster route and made us see even more of Transylvania.) This tour is absolutely worth it. A tiny glance into the beauty of Romania. Thanks a lot for the wonderful experience!
Fantastic trip!!!!! Romania is a very beautiful country, as if torn from fairy tales, castles on top of the mountains among the forests. Do not miss Peles Castle and Brasov!!! SUPER food, drinks, people, the road through the mountains has an incredible view. Great experience and all due to the company, the guide Mary made my day with all the storys and legends about vampires, Dracula, kings and queens. Regarding the organizational part, I really appreciate the measures taken for our distance and protection of tourists. I received masks, there were disinfectants everywhere in the car, rows of seats were left in the bus between the passengers. In short, I felt super safe, given these times and I would definitely repeat this experience! Great Great Experience
Andreea was very knowledgable and friendly. The tour it's totally worth it because you'll cover some of the most important sites in a reasonable period of time. The fact that she also talked about her personal experiences during this period of time, makes it very interesting. We had a little break to have a drink. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who would like to understand the story of what makes Bucarest the city it is today. I'm grateful I choose to do it!
Intimate and tailored perfectly for small groups of friends (or strangers). Dan was personable, hospitable, and educational as he walked our group through a variety of Romanian wines. His presentation meets at the intersection sommelier and historian - coincidentally he happens to be both. We enjoyed hearing about regional varieties and grained both an education and deeper appreciation for the hidden treasure of Romanian wines.
Paul, our guide, had very good English and told us all the stories about Dracula, the cities we were visiting and all that. We had a small group (only the two of us and another couple) and Paul was very helpful all the way. Picked us up right on time and left us at our hotel after the tour. The car was clean and brand new. Totally recommend it!
