Full description

The Atomium symbolizes an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times, referring to the power of nuclear energy that in 1958 was intended for peaceful use. Today it carries on the debate of 1958: What kind of future do we want for tomorrow? It was not intended that the Atomium survive beyond the 1958 World Fair but its popularity soon made it a key landmark, first in Brussels, and then internationally. It has become one of the icons of Brussels, and since its inspired restoration in 2006, it is referred to as the most Belgian of monuments. The panorama alone is worth a trip to the Atomium. Thanks to its location on a naturally elevated plateau on the outskirts of town, the Atomium offers the only true 360-degree panoramic view of the 19 municipalities of Brussels. The permanent exhibition, Atomium, tells the history of this pavilion. This year there are also two temporary exhibitions. The first, ID#2021, is an immersive experience. Discover an exciting sound and light digital creation.

The second, View from My Window, consists of a selection of more than 400 photographs depicting a Belgian success story that started with a Facebook group initiated in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic. The audio-visual installations, prints, webcams, and time-lapses give you an insight into the perspectives of the individuals involved. At 95 meters above ground in the top sphere of the monument, the Atomium Restaurant offers an extraordinary experience. Whether you choose Belgian specialties or seasonal dishes, Alexandre Masson revisits tradition, with the clouds at hand.

Know before you go

  • The time slot is an indication and not a guarantee because waiting lines are common during peak hours
  • Apart from the upper sphere, which is accessible by lift, the rest of the Atomium is not easy to access for people with restricted mobility, and unfortunately it is not suitable for wheelchairs
  • There are 80 steps to walk up and 167 steps to walk down, and it is impossible to avoid this
  • You are advised to visit when the attraction opens and to avoid peak time (between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM) when there is a large influx of visitors
  • After 3:30 PM the flow of visitors tends to reduce
  • During the holiday periods, the attraction can be very crowded which can cause longer waiting times
  • You are invited to check the local operator's Facebook and Google pages which shows the number of visitors in real time
  • Due to the COVID pandemic, your admission time may be somewhat delayed due to slower lines for the elevator

It symbolizes a crystallized molecule of iron that has been magnified to about 165 billion times. it's a must visit if you're in Brussels! a mere 30 minute metro ride from the city center. every sphere has something different to offer - the history on how it was built and the early years & one of the spheres has hypnotic light and sound show. the top sphere, for me, was the best. it offered 360 degree views of the city until miles and miles away.

With this ticket from GYG, you can skip the ticket queue on-site and go directly to the main entrance at the base of the Atomium. At peak times, that could save you 30-60 minutes of queueing outdoors. We were there at 10am (opening) on a wintery Sunday, and the ticket queue was already 15+ minutes. I think the main attraction is the building itself. The view from the top is not especially impressive, and the restaurant is quite formal and expensive (less suitable for coffee and a snack). The exhibition in the base explaining the history of the Atomium was interesting and well presented. The temporary light/sound installation was brilliant, but it's clear why most families with younger children chose to skip these parts.

Must see

This was the highlight of our trip to Brussels! Highly recommend. The building itself is such a marvel and very impressive. This ticket also gives you access to the museum of design, which is just close by. I didn't know when I bought it and it was a nice surprise when I got there. :)
