5 Broadway Theatre Etiquette Rules

Are you a newcomer to Broadway? Or maybe even a regular attendee? Broadway is a magical experience, but if you're unsure of the proper etiquette for attending a show, let us alleviate any fears.

Switch off your cellphone

An obvious and simple code of conduct, but one that's often ignored. Make sure to switch your phone - nothing's more annoying than bleeping in the middle of Mamma Mia!, for performers and fellow audience members alike.

Photos and texts

If you've observed the first rule, this will be no problem. But a bright phone screen in the audience is distracting for the performers and the audience, and any photos you try to take will likely be of poor quality due to lighting and distance, so keep it off.

Dress code

Don't feel that you have to put on your best dress to be allowed into the theater. But if you want to make an event of it, then why not dress up?

Don't eat during the show

Sure, quietly eating a few M&M's isn't going to bother anyone, but just be aware of rustling packets and loud chomping or you might get an unfriendly nudge from your neighbor.

Be aware of space

Everyone's paid a lot to see the show - especially a multi-award-winner like The Lion King, so try not to hog all the space around you.

Broadway: Our Tips

Get there on time!

Make sure to check the time the show starts and plan to arrive 30 minutes early. If you need to pick up your tickets from the box office, you may need to arrive even earlier to allow for standing in line.

Book in advance

If you want to catch one of the big Broadway productions, make sure to book in advance as they do sell out quickly.

  • How to get there
There are several venues where shows take place, but the Broadway theater itself is on, well, Broadway in Manhattan, near 7th Avenue subway station.
  • Additional tips
Book ahead to avoid disappointment. | Don't talk or make a lot of noise during the show, and make sure your phone is switched off!

What People Are Saying About Broadway

Pleasant and interesting tour. Well organized.

Enjoyed observing architectural and design features for a number of Midtown buildings we had previously only viewed in passing. Our guide was effective and did a nice job of providing a historical context for the area and the buildings. Would recommend this tour.

our guide presented his knowledge in a fascinating way, listening to him was so interesting and entertaining as well. He could answer all our questions. Our tour took not only 3 hrs. - we walked along downtown for more than 4 1/2 hrs. missing not a second. This tour was the highlight of our stay in NY !! The combination of competent guidance in a small group is great.
