Very interesting! A lot of thought has gone into the information displayed. The various hands-on exhibits were great for kids. I do wish the information plaques for many of the smaller exhibits were more prominently displayed and printed in a larger font. At times, they were quite hard to read. So good to see such a vessel restored and preserved. Well done to all involved in this project.

We couldn’t have asked for a more enthusiastic and passionate guide around Bristol. Simon was very entertaining and most informative. His knowledge of the city and its culture and history was relayed to us in a most relaxed and often humorous manner. It was a great introduction to Bristol and its many hidden gems and landmarks. I also appreciated his knowledge of public transport ( especially useful if you have travelled by train) and directions to various other attractions around the city. By the end of the talk we left feeling that there was so much more to be seen and much of it ‘ free of charge’. Thank you Simon, will return at some point in the not too distant future.

Full description

Begin your journey by stepping onto Brunel's SS Great Britain, a marvel of maritime history that revolutionized travel, nestled in the very dry dock where it was constructed. This experience offers a unique glimpse into the past across two dedicated museums and the ship itself.

As you explore, immerse yourself in the ship's rich story and the genius of its creator, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The restoration brings history to life, from the engine room with Brunel's original 1000hp engine to the upper deck, meticulously recreated to its 1845 grandeur. Here, you'll witness the distinct class divisions of the era, from the luxurious first-class areas to the humble steerage quarters.

The journey continues as you discover the personal stories of those who traveled on this great liner. From Allan Gilmour's diary entries to the extraordinary tale of Teres Carrol, each narrative adds depth to your experience. The First Class Dining Saloon, animated with the voices of past passengers, offers an auditory feast, transporting you to the golden age of sea travel.

End your visit with a stroll on the historic Bristol waterfront, where the SS Great Britain sits proudly, a testament to engineering ingenuity and historical significance.

The feeling of what it would have truly been like and the recreated atmosphere. The audio interactions were fun and interesting.
