What to Expect
This tour is an opportunity for all to experience a little of the history and heritage of Barbados, relating the journey from slavery to freedom. Participants will explore sites along the Barbadian freedom path including the Barbados Museum, the Garrison Historic Area, and historic Bridgetown.
You will begin with a guided tour of selected exhibits relating to the experience of the enslaved ancestors at the Barbados Museum. The air-conditioned tour vehicle with a dedicated driver will then take you on the road to see the Garrison Historic Area and historic Bridgetown. Your guide will transport you to scenes and experiences of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
You will also learn more about The Cage, the JR Story, and The Emancipation Statue. Your second stop is at the sacred Newton Slave Burial Ground, where ghostly stories reveal the character of this unique site.
You will then pass through the colorful fishing village of Oistins on your way to the free village of Bourne’s Land, with a rest room/leg stretch stop at the Silver Sands Beach Facility. You guide will then share and explain local dishes, preparing your pallets for a savory lunch, as you take a scenic drive through the farmed countryside.
A full traditional Barbadian lunch will be served at the Lemon Arbor Bar in the rural area of St. John. Following lunch you will drive through the free village of Sweet Bottom, as your guide explains how it came into existence. Next is a tour of the Gun Hill Signal Station, part of a 19th century communication system, inspired by the 1816 revolt by the enslaved.
