Full description

Join this tour through the underground of Bremen and enter premises accessed only ever by a few. Dare to look beneath the surface of Bremen. You have the choice of 2 different tours to explore the city's underworld.

Unterwelten 1:

Your journey into the underworld of the Hanseatic city begins at the elephant statue. Descend into the crypt and learn interesting facts about its history and present-day use. Next, make your way to the huge ground-level air-raid shelter at the central station. It was built in the 1940s and later on, at the height of the Cold War, changed into an ABC-Bunker. Cross the Bremen ramparts on the way to the Church of Our Lady, where at least 8 bunkers are located. Thanks to historical photos, you will see how these bunkers looked alike. In the Church of Our Lady, visit the crypt used as a tomb in the Middle Ages.

Unterwelten 2:

Your journey begins at Bremen's first und only underground street. This was used for the underground supply of the surrounding shops and was unknown to the Bremen police for a long time. At the Central Station, thanks to historical photos, you will see what was once under the green court of the Overseas Museum and why the Central Station was not destroyed during the Second World War. Next, make your way to Bremen's freight yard. At the depot, you'll find the former banana ripening halls of the fruit yard, where before WWI, inhabitants of Bremen could satisfy their cravings for exotic fruits. Your tour ends at the huge ABC Hochbunker on Admiralstraße. Descend into the Hochbunker and discover the history of WWII air-raid shelters and the development of the bunker during the 20th century.

A great way to get to know the city from a different perspective. What the addition "in the van" means remains uncertain, because of course we walked. The starting point was the room under the colonial monument of the elephant, the journey continued to the bunker under the station forecourt, to the bunkers on the ramparts, to the crypt under the cathedral and finally to the prison at the east gate. A highly recommended 2.5 continuous tour!

We didn’t know what to expect, so we just went for it and we’re pleasantly surprised! Besides just learning about the non touristy side of Bremen we learned a lot more about how places in Bremen came to be. Our guide was great, he was relaxed put a lot off effort into knowing about what we were looking at and answered every question. He kept the tour interesting. For those reading this, for your planning, there is a lot of walking and you don’t return to the place you started.

Highly recommended when the weather is nice, as there are several meters between the individual stations. Our "guide" was cool, always had the right answer and was very nice. Less recommended in bad weather, in between you get very wet. We had tour number 01, everything okay, the distances between the underworlds okay, you can skip the last underworld, the prison. The last station just drags it out. 01:30 ok without last stop, 02:00 with last stop. Does not have to be. Booked through Travel Guide, we would do it again straight away. At the end, the tour guide, a biology student, provided information about all the tours that could still be done, but very unobtrusively. Everything top.
