Full description

Learn about Cardinal Borghese's vast art collection and the stories behind each piece on this guided tour of the Borghese Gallery and Gardens. Stroll along shady lanes among sculptures and tranquil fountains.

Cardinal Scipione Borghese commissioned both the Villa Borghese itself and many of the great works still on display in its gallery. Works by Bernini, Caravaggio, and Titian remain in their original settings, as envisioned by the Cardinal, a fiercely determined collector. Strictly-controlled entry to the Villa and Gallery can make booking difficult and complicated. This package lets you avoid the organizing and even skip the line to get in when you arrive. During this fully-guided tour you’ll hear more about Cardinal Borghese’s quest to complete his collection, and the stories behind the artworks themselves, including Bernini’s "Apollo and Daphne", Canova’s "Pauline Bonaparte", Caravaggio’s "St. Jerome" and Raphael’s "The Deposition".

Your guide will be an English speaker and an expert on the collection, and audio headsets ensure you’ll hear every word they say. The tour also includes a visit to the Borghese Gardens: once the Cardinal’s private park, now a favorite spot for locals to relax among sculptures, plants, and water features, and get away from it all.

From the Pincio Terrace, you can appreciate another kind of work of art: the vista of Rome itself, from the Piazza del Popolo in the distance.

Excellent experience from start to finish with this tour. Very clear directions to meeting point. We had superb guide Tatiana who clearly is passionate about art and her knowledge and genuine interest in the Borghese gallery was conduicive to imparting this passion to get group. Even if you only have a little interest Tatiana caters to all and she makes great connections between all the works of art and their creators.

Salvadore was so expressive and passionate about the sculptures and paintings. He fit the majority of the gallery in the limited time - which was great because we got to see everything and he didn’t go on about any one thing too long. He was organized and kind and very helpful to those of us who had to use the elevator.

Very enthousiastic guide (I believe her name was Emmanuela, but I could be wrong); she knew a lot about the art and the history of Villa Borghese itself. She helped us understand why, for example, the sculptures are absolute masterpieces to this day. It was also nice that the guide placed some of the stories and descriptions in a modern context, which made the tour more playful. A huge bonus to Villa Borghese, in my opinion, is that they only let in a certain number of people at the same time. It was never too crowded inside, giving the group enough space to look at all the art without being blocked or blocking other people. Afterwards, the guide offered to take a stroll through the park surrounding Villa Borghese and showing us some of the highlights. Really nice added bonus.
