Discover Bologna’s most famous monuments on a private walking tour. See Piazza Maggiore, the Accursio Palace, the Neptune Fountain, St. Petronio’s Basilica, the 2 Towers, and more. Visit the medieval food market and walk along ancient market streets.
What to Expect
Your 2.5-hour private walking tour begins in Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city, where you’ll admire the Neptune Fountain, one of the most important icons of Bologna. Your guide will explain the scandal that Giambologna provoked in the 16th century, carving his statue of the sea god.
Leaving the center, you’ll head to Palazzo del Comune, dating to the 13th and 14th centuries. Note the wonderful terracotta decorations in the courtyard and the majestic staircase that was built to access the Cappella Farnese, passable by the knights on horseback. Alongside City Hall stands the Sala Borsa, Bologna’s largest classical library. An archaeological site, dating to 1,200 B.C. is visible beneath the library’s glass floor.
The next stop is Palazzo Re Enzo, named after the son of Emperor Frederick II. The palace was built between 1244 and 1246, and yet still has an unfinished appearance. Note the massive size of the structure, at 132 meters in length, with a capacity of 28,000 people. The guide will show you the sundial, the middle portal, and the low reliefs, which are considered extraordinary examples of 15th-century art.
Your walking tour continues with a visit to the Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, the original seat of the University of Bologna, which is the most ancient university in the world. The interior walls of the building feature frescoed emblems of the students and professors who studied here.
Visit the Teatro Anatomico, noting its completely wooden frame and the many statues of physicians dating from 1753. Today, part of the building hosts a library with precious manuscripts and a grand total of 700,000 volumes.
Walk through Bologna’s ancient market streets and take in the scents of traditional and fresh products that will lead you to the small shops where pastas, knuckles of ham, and wheels of cheese are so appealingly displayed.
The walking tour ends under the leaning towers Garisenda and Asinelli. These 2 symbols of the city are 48 meters and 97.2 meters high, with respective slopes of 3.2 meters and 2.2 meters.
