Fusing haughty elegance with down-to-earth grit in one beautifully colonnaded medieval grid, Bologna is a beautiful city full of surprises. Discover its secrets with a local expert guide on this walking tour.
What to Expect
Your fascinating journey begins in Piazza Maggiore, the heart of Bologna with its main buildings colored in red: the town hall, the Palazzo del Podesta', the Neptune Fountain, the Palazzo di Re Enzo, the Sala Borsa. And of course the majestic Basilica of San Petronio.
The tour continues with a visit at the original venue of the University (founded in A.D. 1088, it is considered the most ancient university in Western world): the Archiginnasio and its famous anatomical theater, dating back to 1637. The third stop is at the historic food market from which your local guide will take you to the Palace of Merchandise, where the Lombard Romanesque, Gothic and Classical style are blended with a prodigious effect.
From there you will proceed to St. Stephen's Square, overlooking the place where you can find the eponymous complex of religious buildings also known as the Seven Churches. From Santo Stefano you will finally reach Court Isolani, with its old wooden porch, one of the nearly 40 kilometers of arcades that cross the city center. And it is under the arches that you will reach the two medieval towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, landmarks of the city.
