From Sarajevo: Full-Day Hiking Lukomir Village Small Group

Lukomir is located just 42 kilometers away from Sarajevo and represents the highest settled village in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the main Bosnian tourist attractions. The stone houses with wooden roofs and women still wearing traditional clothes are main characteristics of local life from April until December when the village is reachable. Settled at the height of 1,495 meters on the top of Bjelasnica Mountain, Lukomir has stayed out of human touch and represents the most traditional nomadic lifestyle. Indeed, access to the village is impossible from the first snows in December until late April and sometimes even later, except by skis or on foot. Lukomir is known for its traditional attire and the women still wear the hand-knitted costumes that have been worn for centuries. Local food such as pie, domestic donuts, traditional Bosnian coffee and admirable sightseeing are definitely the kind of experience you do not want to miss. Let’s make one more experience together. From there, you can do some magnificent hiking in the area along the ridge of the Rakitnica Canyon, which drops 800 meters down below.

If you’re like me, you planned a lot of history-related things in Bosnia. I loved doing all of that, but I am so glad I scheduled in this hike. So much closer to Sarajevo than I imagined, and the scenery was out of this world. (I’m from Colorado, so I’m not saying that lightly!) Best of all, my guide, Alan, was outstanding. He’s clearly passionate about all of the outdoor opportunities Bosnia offers, and not just hiking. I learned about the flora and fauna, the history of the region (including how the mountains were used during the war), and info about village life and how it’s at risk if/when the current villagers pass away and there are few people moving into the villages. Stunning hike, easy logistics, and a passionate and informative tour guide - doesn’t get better than that for me!

Had a great tour!! Really worth it if you are only in Sarajevo for 1 or 2 maybe 3 days. You learn a lot about the culture and history from a local history. You see the nice and beautiful things of Sarajevo but you also learn and see a lot of the dark history. The lunch was good and tasty. Dennis our guide was more than great. In short, really recommended. PS do not expect to learn everything about the Olympic Games with this tour, but you get a good impression.

We had a fantastic day hiking to Lukomir. Our guide Mirza was outstanding and made the day very memorable. The views were unlike anything I had seen before and it was truly a highlight of our trip to BiH.

This Day trip of Sarajevo was the best. We enjoyed it a great deal. The guides were informative and told interesting stories. We recommend this tour with enthusiasm!
