  • Visit one of the most legendary museums in Berlin
  • Admire the original artifacts from successful escapes
  • Learn how East Germans tried to flee from the unjust GDR regime
Full description
The museum was founded on October 19th, 1962, shortly after the construction of the Berlin Wall, as a protest against the Wall and to provide assistance to the people seeking help. The Berlin Wall Museum was formed with the purpose of fighting against human rights violations as a result of the wall. Gradually the museum increased its exhibition space and contributed to the fall of the Wall. The museum had a vital role in history and the objects on display in the museum provide evidence of this. They are original artifacts from successful escapes such as a hot-air balloon, a mini-submarine, cars and airplanes. People helping East Germans to flee used the museum as a base from which they planned the escapes and organized resistance to the unjust GDR regime. After escaping, the refugees and their helpers donated their various means of conveyance and other objects to the museum.

Quite a bit of thought provoking material. It feels small at first but keep walking... I enjoyed the additional displays about Human Rights, Civil Rights...the very current car, shot up and damaged in Ukraine. It's a shame that 90% of the video screens were not working. Either fix or remove them.

The museum itself was really good and really informative but on the day we were there, a number of people were going around pressuring people to give donations. They were quite rude and refused to take no for an answer. When my partner eventually gave them some money they said it wasn’t enough and they wanted more. We were followed around by atleast 4 people which ruined it a little for myself and my partner and a lot of other visitors that day.

The museum lays a hard impression. One better come prepared. 1-2 hours would be sufficient time to see all the materials. The the place is not big though it is impressive. If you are carrying a bag be prepared to leave a deposit 2 euro coin for a locker.
