Cycle the streets of Berlin on a bike tour of the city’s multicultural attractions. Departing from Alexanderplatz, see street art and fantastic examples of urban renewal, such as the Tempelhof Airport and Tacheles Gallery.
What to Expect
Contemporary Berlin has earned an enviable reputation as a vibrant bastion of counter culture, progressive thought, and creative spirit. On this half-day bike tour you will discover a city teeming with street art and non-conformists, scattered among the gentrification, real estate, and high-tech buildings.
Departing from Alexanderplatz, visit the Tempelhof Airport, Germany's first air strip, where the Kaiser witnessed his first flight. Tempelhof rose to extreme importance as West Berlin's lifeline during the Berlin Airlift of 1948/1949, but it is now a massive city park. Bike the original runways, see the old terminal building built by the Nazis, and discover how Berliners are transforming the incredible space.
Continue to the Tacheles Gallery, a classic example of colliding city ambitions. Originally a pre-World War II department store, after the fall of the Wall it was transformed into gallery spaces, bars, and a cinema. For many it symbolized Berlin's openness to counter-culture in the heart of the Mitte district. However its central location has meant the recent sale of the real estate, and its future is threatened.
Your guide will describe how Berlin became a fertile ground for counter culture and discuss what the future holds for squats, open spaces, unauthorized clubs, and more. You will discover Berlin’s cultural diversity. While this leads to a colorful melting pot of ideas, some integration issues have brought forth caustic issues. On Tuesday and Friday the tour visits the huge Turkish market, and Berlin's massive new mosque. Both provide great opportunities to discuss these poignant issues and how Berlin is coping with them.
