Discover the remains of the Berlin Wall on this private 2-hour tour of the Berlin Wall Memorial and Bernauer Strasse. Learn how people attempted to escape across the wall and the devastating consequences this brought with it.
What to Expect
The tour starts either with pick-up at your hotel or near Nordbahnhof station. Nordbahnhof was a so-called ghost station located in the former territory of East Berlin, where trains from West Berlin would travel through without stopping. Very close to the station are the remains of the Berlin Wall with an information center and the Berlin Wall Memorial across the street.
From the tower of the Documentation Center it is possible to look at some part of the historical death strip, which is partly preserved in its original state. Next to the Documentation Center stands the Chapel of Reconciliation on the foundations of the Church of Reconciliation, which was demolished in 1985.
You will then head to Bernauer Strasse. Here the division of the city was particularly evident, since the houses were located in East Berlin territory but the footpath was located in West Berlin. The residents of these houses jumped out of the windows to escape or were forcibly relocated while the houses were demolished. Markings still show the outlines of the houses and the location of the escape tunnels that were dug at this site.
