Full description
Hosted by an expert guide, you will not only be able to admire the impressive artifacts and architectural structures, you will also take a journey through history and gain a critical understanding of the collection's relationship to Berlin's past and present. Hear stories about how heavily destroyed the museums were after the end of WWII when the Museum Island was almost a complete ruin. Only in 1999 was Museum Island awarded UNESCO status. This tour will introduce you to the Mesopotamian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Greek, Egyptian, Antique art and culture. The guide gives a very detailed explanation of how these cultures began, why they were important throughout history and what is their heritage today. Visit the famous Ishtar Gate, learn when it was built and why, as well as the beautiful bust of Nefertiti and the Market Gate of Miletus. After the tour, visit the remaining museums of the Museum Island at your own pace. The Bode Museum offers sculptures dated in the Middle Ages up until the early Renaissance and a collection of artifacts from Byzantine art. If you wish to see ancient Greek and Roman decorative art, you should visit the Altes Museum that contains a permanent collection of ancient Greek and Roman vases and statues. In the Alte Nationalgalerie, you can enjoy exhibitions of Neoclassical, Romantic, Impressionist and Modernist art.

Jamie was an excellent guide! My wife, who is a historian herself, and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and learned a great deal more than what we would have on our own. It is hard to believe that we were so lucky to have a guide of Jamie's caliber, with his Ph.D. educational background and experience in archaeology. He was very organized and provided us with all the necessary historical details in a clear, concise, and enthusiastic manner. It is a little unfortunate that we were responsible for delaying the tour for 15-20 minutes because, when we did not find Jamie due to our own misunderstanding of where the meeting location was, and then asked the museum staff, they sent us off in the wrong direction. Perhaps a clearer meeting point should be chosen and the staff made aware of Jamie's (and possibly other guides') presence. Jamie did not lose his cool and quickly got the tour started - the mark of true professionalism!

The Museums were amazing, we were a family of three and it included a little 7 years old girl, we voted and neither one of us could decide which museum is better and what we liked best. Our guide Mike probably had something to do with that, his profound knowledge of history and how he told it made this visit unforgettable. Although I must say that my girl is very good at museums, normally I wouldn’t recommend it if you have small kids because you will loose much of the explanation.
