What to Expect
The sublime architecture of the Bode Museum, which is situated on Museum Island, is one of the most popular photo scenes in the city of Berlin. But only a few know the treasures that are hidden behind the walls. 3 outstanding collections are presented in the building at the same time. In addition to the Museum of Byzantine Art, it also houses the Münzkabinett as well as the Sculpture Collection in conjunction with an art gallery.

In 1904, when the museum opened under the name Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, visitors were impressed by the daring exhibition concept. Sculpture, painting, and architecture were presented side by side and served visitors a better understanding and enjoyment.

The building was planned as a museum for the art of the Christian eras. Even today you can admire early Christian objects such as the monumental apse mosaic of Ravenna and the delicate ivory work from Byzantium. Recently, masterpieces from the Museum of Decorative Arts have been added together with the Guelph Treasure.

Accompanied by an art historian or classical archaeologist, you will see and learn more about famous sculptures including works of art by Tilman Riemenschneider, Andreas Schlüter, Balthasar Permoser, Donatello, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Antonio Canova, and many more.
