What to Expect
Tour participants meet in front of Starbucks at Friedrichstrasse 61. This is a 4-hour tour exploring divided Berlin in the Cold War era. Led by a local guide with a high degree of academic study and personal memory of the Berlin Wall and its downfall in 1989, this is a very informative tour.

The tour begins at Checkpoint Charlie. This is the most famous border crossing and the one mostly used by the allied military. However it was also checkpoint where people attempted to escape from the East. In most cases this ended in death. Your guide will tell you the haunting stories of this turbulent era. You will also learn about the tank confrontation of 1961, one of the events that Checkpoint Charlie is so famous for.

From here the tour moves to the Palace of Tears, a lesser-known landmark. This is another former crossing point with a poignant history. You will learn about the divided transport system and hear the stories of ‘ghost stations’. Bernauer Straße is the next stop. This is the only remaining spot where the Wall still exists in its original setting. You will hear about how the system was organized. Also, with the help of personal accounts and memoirs, you can attempt to understand what inhabitants truly thought of the Wall at the time. Bösebrücke is the location where the Wall finally came down on 09 November 1989. Visit the memorial here and learn what made the guards who for so long refused crossing, suddenly open their gates.

This is a very personalized tour. There are also plentiful interesting landmarks nearby and so if you choose, the guide will leave the programmed route and customize the tour for your needs.
