5 Highlights of Belvedere Palace, Vienna

Belvedere is a complex of cultural buildings in Vienna, built as a summer getaway in the times of the Habsburgs. Split into different sections, like the Upper and Lower Belvedere, it's a good idea to prioritize each part of your visit.

Upper Belvedere

Italian painter Solimena painted the ceiling fresco in the larger palace's Golden Room - just one of the areas where you can crane your neck at all the beautifully-preserved artwork on the walls and ceilings.

Lower Belvedere

The smaller of the two main palaces, Lower Belvedere served more as a residence than its Upper counterpart. The style here is more concentrated on marble and gold - so no less extravagant.

Plan your visit so that dusk is falling just as you get to the gardens - the blue light falling onto the statues and fountains is just perfect.

Belvedere's Orangery is basically a fancy, early type of greenhouse for - you guessed it - growing oranges. Although its original function ceased in the 19th century, today it houses a gallery.

Palace Stables

This was once home to Prince Eugen of Savoy's royal horses. The stables' interior now more closely resembles that of a chapel, with their medieval iconographic art.

What People Are Saying About Belvedere, Vienna

Coach tour was poor but the Palace was impressive

The coach tour commentary in both English and Spanish was most confusing and left the ears feeling battered. His trying to describe places in two languages as the coach rushed by and fought with other traffic was most unsatisfactory. We felt that we had learned virtually nothing about Vienna. I think a single language walking tour would probably have been better. The Palace was impressive but the tour was a little rushed, again not helped by the dual language commentary.

This was a well run informative and very enjoyable tour.

There is so much to see in Vienna. This was a great tour to start with as it gives the locations of all of the important buildings with some history. The Palace was wonderful and the tour guide did a great job.

Excellent, no problem to change voucher.

Wonderful city, easy access U-bahn, no jam at all, very friendly and safe city. Thanks.
