A brilliant experience! our guide Vincenzo was very knowledgeable and interesting and we learned alot about the Etna. The views were amazing and the walk itself was fun, challenging and exhilarating. Definitely recommend this experience if you are visiting Etna!

The tour was the highlight of our holiday in Sicily. It was very challenging given the level of experience of our group but really rewarding. High winds, cold weather and tough terrain (loose volcanic scree) made it hard going but made the elation of the trip all the more rewarding. We were unable to go to the summit due to recent volcanic activity and high winds meant the cable car was closed for the outbound journey so we travelled to 2500m in a 4x4, then the guide led us to a viewpoint over Valle del Bove and then up to the Barbagallo crater at 3000m before hiking down again. Our guide Simone was fantastic. He was a profoundly knowledgeable geologist with a deep passion for Etna. He conveyed complex information in a clear and fascinating way and provided support when my 15-year-old was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the terrain and conditions. We can’t thank him enough. We were also grateful to borrow a warm jacket and hiking poles. An amazing trip - fully recommended.

Full description

Hike to the top of Europe's tallest active volcano with a volcanologist guide. Discover the views from the summit craters, explore a lava tunnel and the Valle del Bove.

Meet your guide at the local partner's office opposite the station of the southern Etna cableway. From the top of the cable car you will cross lunar landscapes aboard a 4x4 up to an altitude of 2850-meters in the Torre del Filosofo area.

Begin your trek until we reach the edge of the Bocca Nuova (3300-meters) a crater which opened in 1968, one of the most impressive in the area. Stroll to the top and enjoy 360° panoramas and, if the weather permits, see as far as the Aeolian Islands and almost all of northern Sicily.

Descend from the summit craters and pass through the craters of the 2002 eruption, then walk down a fun descent of volcanic sand and admire the volcanic amphitheater of the Valle del Bove, a spectacular caldera 8 km long and 4 km wide. Return by cable car to the starting point.

Beginning of the tour was a little bit disorganised with checking in of lots of different groups Once we got up the cable car it was fantastic and our guide Julia was really excellent. We did a very interesting and challenging hike and got to see and learn a lot more than you would doing the 4x4 excursion. REMEMBER that this is not an easy hike! There were people in our tour complaining that the hike was strenuous and too dangerous, which should have been very obvious to them when they agreed to climb an active volcano... don't expect this to be a walk in the park. That said we had ages from 7 to 60+ in the group who managed to complete without complaining, and we always maintained a comfortable speed so slower hikers were never left behind. Anybody with decent fitness and adequate hiking gear (especially sun cream!) can do this for sure!
