Take an excursion from the Serbian capital to Topola and Oplenac, where you’ll see the famous mosaics of the Church of St. George, the Mausoleum of the Karadjordjevic dynasty, and a former royal residence.
What to Expect
On this half-day tour you’ll travel with an English-speaking guide into the heart of the Šumadija vineyards area, stopping in the town Topola. The town is known for wine production and was the center of many historical events during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

The town was established by Djordje Petrovic Karadjordje, the leader of the Serbs during the First Uprising. There’s a memorial complex here in his honor. You’ll see a monument to Karadjordje in the center of the plateau, surrounded by the remains of Karadjordje fortress with 3-story towers built in the years 1811-1813. There are also 2 former residences on the site, now museums, and the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary. The Church is well known for the frescoes adorning its walls.

On the hill of Oplenac, above Topola, you’ll visit a complex comprising of the Church of St. George, the Karadjordjevic Dynasty Mausoleum and a house built by the Royal Family Karadjordjevic. The interior of the Church is covered in mosaics, which required over 6 million pieces to complete!

The crypt contains the relics of members of the Karadjordjevic dynasty. The Mausoleum, built by King Petar I, is covered with white marble from nearby Vencac Mountain and from Carrara in Italy.

The house of Petar Karadjordjevic stands opposite the Church, and was built in 1912. It served as the summer residence of the King.
