Full description
On this half-day tour you’ll travel with an English-speaking guide into the heart of the Šumadija vineyards area, stopping in the town Topola. The town is known for wine production and was the center of many historical events during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The town was established by Djordje Petrovic Karadjordje, the leader of the Serbs during the First Uprising. There’s a memorial complex here in his honor. You’ll see a monument to Karadjordje in the center of the plateau, surrounded by the remains of Karadjordje fortress with 3-story towers built in the years 1811-1813. There are also 2 former residences on the site, now museums, and the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary. The Church is well known for the frescoes adorning its walls. On the hill of Oplenac, above Topola, you’ll visit a complex comprising of the Church of St. George, the Karadjordjevic Dynasty Mausoleum and a house built by the Royal Family Karadjordjevic. The interior of the Church is covered in mosaics, which required over 6 million pieces to complete! The crypt contains the relics of members of the Karadjordjevic dynasty. The Mausoleum, built by King Petar I, is covered with white marble from nearby Vencac Mountain and from Carrara in Italy. The house of Petar Karadjordjevic stands opposite the Church, and was built in 1912. It served as the summer residence of the King. You will then visit Avala Mountain, famous for its Mausoleum of the Unknown Hero (from World War I) built on the mountain top (511 meters above sea level). Finally, gain entrance to one of the landmarks of Belgrade, Avala TV tower. At 204 meters high, it is the tallest structure in all the Balkans.

    Great Excursion!

Peter and our driver Sasha (spelling?) were incredible hosts. Peter was very informative about the places we visited and even though we were the only ones on the tour he gave the tour with enthusiasm. I suggest bringing water and a little snack with you as it is a bit long of a day. Peter did give us some crackers and stopped at a little shop so we could grab some snacks for the return journey. Great tour, highly recommend!

    Interesting excursion

Enjoyed being south of Belgrade to see the countryside and the beautiful scenery en route to Topola. Oplenac is well worth spending time in to see the beautiful mosaics. Unfortunately it was overcast on the day so we didn't get to see much from the Avala tower. Really enjoyed the wine tasting at the end of the day, which we lingered over, but would have preferred to have some snacks included as part of the tour at least at the vineyard, as it is a long almost full day without a lunch stop.
