We spent the day off a cruise ship with a terrific guide, Jerry, who is not only a resident of the Belfast area, but a truly passionate guide who explained everything so well. He knew where and when to take shortcuts to avoid long lines, gave us all of the sites we had asked, did it all with a smile, great humor and terrific history of the region. He knew the fun folklore stories as well as the passionate truths of all of the struggles during the Terribles of the 1970's through about thirty years ... very passionate ... highly informed and interesting ... made for such an incredible day ... and we did not have to wait for bus loads of people to load and unload at every stop ... it was relaxing to see such an expanse in the one day we had. Jerry was incredibly informed, a great driver and simply fun to spend the day seeing such amazing sights ... the castles, Bushmills, the Giants' Causeway, the entire Antrim Coast and the sights of the passions of the struggles of the Terribles. Wow!
Our driver was waiting for us when we disembarked and very friendly. He informed us we had a 90 minute drive to the coast, where our tour would begin. We didn't realize that meant we wouldn't be talking to him during the trip. This was a missed opportunity to learn more about Belfast and the surrounding area. Once we arrived, our driver was very helpful letting us know how to experience the different attractions, as well as giving us guidance on how much time we should spend in order to complete our agenda. By the end of the trip, our guide was showing us attractions that we didn't know about, and were value add to the trip. Overall our response is mostly positive, but if the guide had been more interactive in the beginning, the entire experience would have been better. One negative, however, is that there were 4 of us, and the taxi really is suited for 3. One of us had to ride in the "jump" seat, which is really not conducive for an extended trip.
Our guide was early for the trip, did not have to wait for the pickup at the hotel. We had a large van for the five of us. Frank was the driver and he had chips, water, jaffa cakes, and umbrellas for us. He showed us the sites, talked about the history of the area and his own personal connection with the it, and growing up in Belfast during "the troubes". We stopped at the Bushmill Inn for lunch. Very good food with a nice charming atmosphere. (Frank ask us what type of food that we wanted and whether in a restaurant or pub, we let Frank pick) The wind was blowing hard and raining for most all of the trip, but Frank worked though it by doing the trip in a different order to minimize the time in the rain, and made the day most enjoyable. I would recommend this trip.
With just two of us in the car it was roomy. Our driver took us to all the spots we wanted to see near Belfast on our day charter. Sceanic costal drive was especially nice. Once we got our driver to start talking he shared a lot with us. He knew how to see the attractions and get the most from a visit. We could stop and take pictures where we wanted. He picked a nice quaint cafe for us for lunch. I would certainly do this again!
Our private tour of Giants Causeway and the Antrim Coast was very personalized by our guide, Patty. He made sure we saw everything that was expected and much more that wasn't. He went out of his way to take us to places along the way that I'm sure no one else had a chance to do on a tour of this area. He was exceptional and we were so pleased by his creative input.
