The luxurious, laid-back seaside town of Biarritz is popular with tourists and surfers alike. It boasts some of the best beaches in Europe and was originally a town of pirates and whalers.
Discover how Biarritz became renowned in 1854, when the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, built a palace on the beach. Now the Hôtel du Palais, you will hear stories of the British royal family and European royalty who regularly took vacations in Biarritz, and learn why the resort became a grand aristocratic capital of Europe.
The town owes most of its charm to the gardens, arranged on the edges of cliffs and among the rocks along the multiple sandy beaches. Visit the lighthouse to catch breathtaking views of a few of the stunning beaches, including Chambre d’Amour and the Grand Plage.
