What to Expect
Explore the historic center of Alberobello on a half-day shore excursion from Bari, with round-trip transfers from the cruise ship terminal to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in rural Puglia.
Upon arrival in Alberobello, enjoy a guided tour of the areas best known for their unusual trulli houses, made using ancient drywall (mortarless) building techniques. Wander the historic center, following a path through the narrow streets to the trulli neighborhoods of Aia Piccola and Monti, and see streets lined with the conical-roof houses.
Learn about life in rural Italy in the early 1900s, and how and why the trulli were built. You can also look inside a trulli to see typical décor of the period, as well as stop to buy craft gifts in the souvenir shops.
Visit the trulli church of St. Anthony, which opened to the public in 1927. Included is a look inside the Sovereign Trullo, one of the most advanced trulli houses. Declared a national monument of Italy in 1923, the 2-storey trullo was so named because it hosted the Blessed Sacrament and relics of St. Cosmas and Damian, patron saints of the city.
