Enjoy a magical tour to the beautiful mountain of Montserrat and cava wineries of Catalonia. Explore the Holy Cave and the monastery of Santa Maria before moving on to Codorníu wineries.
What to Expect
This tour allows you to spend a morning visiting the most mysterious and magical site in Catalonia, the mountain of Montserrat, before exploring wineries where some of the finest cava is produced. On the mountain, 2380 feet above sea level and surrounded by magnificent scenery, you will visit the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat. This religious retreat includes a basilica where you will find the Virgin of Montserrat - the 'Black Madonna'. This is a venerated 12th-century Romanesque carving characterized by its unique dark skin, hence the nickname.
After visiting the monastery, a walking tour will show you the unparalleled views in this magical environment, which was declared a national park in 1987. Next, you will discover the Holy Cave, where legend has it the virgin has appeared, and which is now a center of pilgrimage and prayer. To conclude the Montserrat visit, you can enjoy the angelic voices of ‘La Escolania de Montserrat’, one of the oldest children's choirs in Europe.
In the afternoon you will head to Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the center of cava production. In this locality the wineries with the most history of all are Codorníu, with a tradition dating back almost five centuries. It was this family business that first produced cava according to traditional methods, and with Penedès own grapes, in 1872. The wineries are located in a landmark building of Catalan modernism, designed by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, a contemporary of Gaudí. You will discover the history of these cellars and the process of cava production. Of course, you will also taste some of the finest wines of the region.
