What to Expect
Pick-up at hotel and begin the tour at the Palace Vimanmek, known as the palace in the clouds, a three-story mansion. It was originally built in 1868 as a summer residence on the island of Kho Si Chang, and transferred to Dusit Hall in 1901. Vimanmek Teak Mansion contains 81 rooms, halls and anterooms, and is said to be the world's largest golden-teak building, allegedly built without the use of a single nail. It became a favorite place of King Rama V, who used it as a royal residence between 1902 and 1906.
Next, have a chance to visit the Villa Hong Suan, the Throne Room and Anantasamakhom Apisek. Visit the National Museum, founded in 1874 by King Rama V and located in the Palace of Wang Na. Other than preserving and displaying Thai artifacts dated from Dvaravati, Srivijaya, to Sukhothai and Ayutthaya period, the museum also displays extensive collections of regional Asian Buddhist arts such as Indian Gandhara, Chinese Tang, Vietnamese Cham, Indonesian Java, and Cambodian Khmer arts.
Have lunch at the restaurant Supatra River House along the Rio Chao. After that, visit Suan Pakkad Palace, the residence of Prince Chumbot of Nakhon Sawan, grandson of King Rama V. The palace is characterized by a mixture of Khmer and Thai styles. There are even stories saying part of a monastery of Ayuthaya was moved here in 1958 for a prince's birthday gift.
