Discover the hidden secrets of Thailand’s former capital Ayutthaya situated just 50 miles north of Bangkok. Visit majestic ruins and the grandiose summer palace of the King, before cycling through the Thai countryside on this full-day tour from Bangkok.
What to Expect
Situated just 50 miles (80 km) north of Bangkok, Ayutthaya was for 400 years the thriving capital of Thailand. That ended abruptly in 1767 when the city was sacked by Burmese invaders, who left the city in ruins. Despite the destruction, Ayutthaya still radiates a peculiar kind of beauty and tranquility.
After a short transfer from your Bangkok hotel, you will cycle around the ruins of the impressive Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The Historical Park has an array of different temples and ruins including Wat Yai Chaimongkol, Wat Phra Mahatat, and one of Ayutthaya’s most popular temples, Wat Chaiwattanaram.
Continuing the tour, you will leave Ayutthaya and venture into the Thai countryside, taking back roads that follow the Chao Phraya River. Ride through quaint villages until the trail meets a river ferry. After crossing the river, enjoy a traditional Thai lunch at a riverside restaurant.
After lunch, hop back on your bike for a visit to the Thai king's magnificent summer palace. Built in the 17th century this picturesque palace has several styles of architecture including Chinese, Khmer, and Swiss. Like many Thai Royal Palaces it is divided into two sections, the Inner Palace and the Outer Palace.
An easy day-trip that totals 15 miles (25 km) riding, this tour is suitable for any level. Great for the individual traveler, as well as families.
