“Batik” is a traditional process of dying whole cloth with beautiful patterns that originated in Indonesia. On this 3-hour batik-making experience, learn all the traditional techniques as practiced by generations of Indonesian families. Get up close to the Balinese batik guru who will guide you through the process and share with you the philosophies behind some of the most common batik patterns.   Start with applying hot wax to a stenciled design on a fabric canvas, then apply the colors to the patterned fabric. I was picked up from my place early so that we could collect another couple before heading to this beautiful place. We were brought to a beautiful art shop and craft area in a rice field. It poured rain while I worked on my batik and the couple worked on jewelry pieces. They gave adequate instruction and help to get started, and then let me be to work on my piece. I was brought complimentary coffee and banana tempura. While my piece was drying, I played with a brand new puppy and walked through their shop without being haggled to buy anything (which actually resulted in me buying something instead of feeling pressured and walking away, like I usually do). Things were clearly marked with prices so I knew I wasn’t being taken advantage of for being a single white female. The driver patiently waited for us to be finished and drove us back to our hotels. Lovely people, beautiful place, and I loved being able to try my hand at an authentic Balinese craft.
