Bali: Mount Agung Sunrise Trekking Experience

5. Bali: Mount Agung Sunrise Trekking Experience

There are two common hiking routes up the mountain, which you will need to choose between.  Mount Agung Hike via Besakih Temple (from the West) The most challenging yet rewarding route for hiking up Mount Agung. The hike starts near the Besakih Temple, also called the Mother Temple of Bali. You'll be hiking through the dense jungle of Besakih. The ascent will take approximatively 6 to 7 hours, and ends at the very highest point of the mountain. The final hour or so is exceptionally demanding, often requiring climbing up the mountain on all fours. The hike starts at about 11.00 PM, so that you arrive at the top before dawn. From here, you are able to witness the stunning sunrise overlooking Mount Rinjani in Lombok. You will also have a masjestic view of the giant crater of Caldera Batur, and Lake Batur. Mount Agung Hike via Pasar Agung Temple (from the South) This is an easier, 3-4 hour hike in which you will ascend about 2,000 meters. It's not as challenging as the Besakih Temple route. The hike ends about 100 meters below the actual summit, but the views are still excellent in all directions, as well as down into the crater. The starting time will be about 2:00 AM, with the aim of reaching the peak just before dawn.

The tour was very well organised. Our driver picked Sopleg picked us up well on time. The drive to the starting point including the ferry crossing was long but passed quickly. Sopleg gave us a lot detail about the area and was able to answer all questions we had about Balinese culture. At the starting point we were met by Anton our guide for the hike. The hike up was about 2 hours on a easy path with a few steep sections. Anton then led us into the crater, which is more challenging to climb. He provided a lot background information about Ijen and the sulphur mining. We had plenty of time to see the blue flames and the acidic lake. After the easier descend in daylight we had breakfast at a relaxed restaurant. Overall the trip was very exhausting due to the lack of sleep, but our guides and drivers tried to make it as pleasant as they could. If I had more time I would potentially do the longer trip with Bromo from the same provider.

It was an adventure. We were picked up by Arie (taxi driver) at 11pm in Gerogkag. He drove very well & gave us tips for other destinations. Agus led us to Ijen & the blue fire. He was very helpful and personable. He also showed us a few photo spots and took pictures of us himself. So, here are a few facts: 1. The ascent is doable even if you are not very athletic, but it is steep. Alternatively, you can take a "taxi" up for a fee. The path is at least 1.50 m wide. 2. The descent to the fire is not entirely harmless (stone path), but with a good guide (Agus) it is very doable, even if you are afraid of heights in the dark. "Good shoes" such as sneakers are sufficient. The path is wider than some scooter roads in Bali ;) 3. The morning hours are just beautiful when we return. 4. The final breakfast was also very good. With the two men, the tour can only be good. :)

We loved it. The very friendly driver Komang picked us up at our hotel in Canggu on time. He provided us with food and drink throughout the journey and bridged the long journey with nice conversations. On the way to Mount Ijen we collected our guide Piki. As some of us take a break from climbing more often due to Long Covid. Piki was very patient and helpful. He kept checking that we were doing well and also helped us descend into the crater. He also took a lot of photos of us at the top and filmed a video with various scenes and sent it to us. Overall, we can recommend both unreservedly.

Fami and Made Cheng were great guides! We were able to see the blue fire, sulfur mines, and watch the sun rise over the blue lake and mountainous background. We ended with a local Indonesian breakfast. Would recommend this to anyone active who is looking for a unique adventure during their time in Indonesia

Sooo much fun! I was scared but the instructors made me super comfortable. The photographer got AMAZING shots for me.
