Get an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Bali in time to watch the sunrise from the top of Mount Batur. Depart between 1:30 AM and 2:30 AM (depending on the location of your hotel), and then journey towards the active volcano near the village of Kintamani. Upon arrival at Mount Batur, get a short introduction and safety briefing from your private guide. All the guides are locals with experience of climbing Mount Batur since they were children. Benefit from their extensive knowledge and passion for the region before you embark on your 1.5-hour trek to the highest volcanic crater in Bali in time to watch the sunrise. Upon arrival at the top, enjoy breakfast and take in the amazing views of the surrounding area at the break of day. After sunrise, enjoy some time to walk around the crater of the volcano before crossing a hill of lava and black sand. This was the main activity on my list during my recent trip to Bali, after researching several versions of the hike with various additions, I am so glad I chose this version! Fair warning: the hike is not for the weak! I have done 14 days of trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal, but this was quite steep on very loose soil. They say you can do it in regular tennis sneakers, but I really recommend a hiking shoe. The guide was very nice to practically pull me up half of the way. I booked the tour alone, but was paired with another girl on her own and one other couple, which was a perfect sized group to keep momentum going. The view was beautiful, despite heavy fog. Bring some extra cash with you as there are people at the top selling hot/cold beverages and bracelets made from the very volcano. The breakfast is minimal but just perfect for your hike. The hot springs was the perfect addtition to relax or over exerted calves after, I highly recommend including this option!

I can’t tell you how much I recommend this! All of the workers and guides were so friendly and you will not regret it. I’m from NYC and am not a hiker by any meansso I was very worried about doing this, but my guide Komang was AMAZING!! He was so funny and literally held my hand through most of the hike, made sure I was drinking water and gave good time for resting. If you do it definitely ask for him he’s INCREDIBLE!! Afterwards our driver was Rapi who was just as fantastic! He was so sweet, stopped to take photos for us and made sure we were well taken care of. Again…I would 100% recommended.

Great tour! The price is about the same as renting a driver for a day, but you also get a guide. Totally worth the difficult hike, the views from Mt Batur were amazing! The hot spring afterwards was a great treat, don't skip it. I did the hike in "barefoot" shoes and it was fine, the terrain is soft for the most part. Thanks Putu for the drive, and Aris for the hike!
