  • Watch the sunrise over the clouds at Bali’s sacred Mount Batur
  • Trek 11 km (4 hours) through the jungle under a blanket of stars
  • Summit at the volcanic crater lake and take in panoramic views at the summit ridge
Full description
The sunrise trek to Mount Batur volcano is considered an essential Bali experience. The famous volcano stands at 1,717 m (5,633 ft) above sea level, overlooking spectacular scenery with views of the crater lake, black lava landscape, and the massive peak of Gunung Agung, Bali’s holiest mountain and the highest point on the island. It takes around 2 hours to reach the summit (1.5 if you're fast); the total hiking duration is usually 4 hours. Before light, you will be walking at cooler climes under an awe-inspiring blanket of stars. At the top, you will witness the sun come up over a sea of clouds before continuing to trek around the crater lake and summit ridge. You'll be given a hot beverage and a sandwich and egg to revive your spirits. After exploring recent lava flows and younger craters, you will head down to loop back to the starting point through a unique volcanic landscape full of native flora and fauna (watch out for the tall grass with purple blooms), encountering mischievous Balinese long-tailed macaques along the way. You must be up and early to begin their trek to make it in time for the break of dawn. You will arrive at the starting point at 3:30am and will begin with a short briefing. Arriving at the top of Mt. Batur takes 1.5-2 hours (3.5km); the total distance of the trail is around 11km.

I booked this trip by myself thinking I might have been joined with another group. But it was just me and my guide Agus. I was happy with that because he didn’t push me and took breaks when he saw fit. Was really good at taking photos and knew all the best spots for it. He wasn’t feeling the best and communicated that with me so we were on the same page. Always tip your guides! They work hard. Will recommend him to anyone of my friends that books. Also the driver who picked me up was patient and called me when I slept through my alarms & messages. Appreciate that. I was also really tired after the whole hike. I didn’t book anything after and felt just doing the hike was the cheaper and healthier option.

My guide was great. He was knowledgeable and great at taking pictures. The hike itself is hard but definitely doable, just take breaks along the way. At the top, it rained so the sunrise was not great but the view was still amazing. So, regardless on if it rains or not, you should do it!

Maku was the best guide I could’ve asked for. He spoke about the Balinese culture, told stories, and guided us to the top of the volcano at a great pace and always patient and happy to take a break with us. The group was really small (we were 2) making it more intimate and fun. It’s quite cold as soon as you arrive at the base, so I would recommend wearing something warm and bringing something warmer for the top while awaiting the sun rise. I wasn’t a fan of the motorbikes scooting people up and down. It polluted the air and made for a rather unpleasant experience. I was embarrassed for all the young people choosing that bike ride up simply due to laziness. The walk itself is completely doable, with just a bit of climbing at the top. If little children of 6 can do it, anyone can.
