Overall a 10/10 must try experience if you can get past driving over 30 hours in 3 days. The views were phenomenal. We had Adi as our guide, who was an absolute pleasure, we couldn't have asked for a better guide. He was accommodating, friendly, and entertaining throughout the entirety of the trip, including the very early starts. Should we ever be in Bali or Java again, he will be our go to contact. Thanks again!

This was the most incredible and unique experience i’ve ever had whilst travelling! If you’re thinking about doing it, GO FOR IT. Our guide Cheng was the best! He is so kind, he had such positive energy and really wanted us to have a great time. He went above and beyond to help us feel comfortable during the long drives. Day 1 is a long drive and ferry to Java. Day 2 is leave at 3am in a private Jeep to the summit of Bromo for sunrise. After this, the chance to take photos, then leave and drive to Bromo crater, you can climb up and walk along the crater edge. I’ve never seen landscapes like this! :) Day 3 is leave at 1am, drive to Mount Ijen start point and start hiking at 2am to the summit. You have a private guide with you the whole way. After this, you will carefully hike down inside the crater to see the blue flames and watch sunrise over the crater lake. Stunning views on the way back to the car that you couldn’t appreciate before in the dark! Thanks for the great trip Cheng!

Full description

Spend 3 days exploring the volcanic landscapes of East Java. Take in a spectacular sunrise and panoramic views from the peak of Mount Bromo. Marvel at the blue flames on a descent into the Ijen crater.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Bali–Gilimanuk Harbour–Mt. Bromo
From western Bali travel by ferry to the eastern tip of Java. Drive to the Mount Bromo area, with a lunch stop along the way. On arrival, check in at the hotel.

Day 2: Mt. Bromo–Banyuwangi (Ijen Crater)
Very early in the morning, head to the rim of the Tengger caldera. Marvel at the panoramic views at sunrise with the active Mount Semeru volcano in the background.

Continue to Mount Bromo. Take a short walk and climb the 240 stairs to the peak. After breakfast back at the hotel, drive to Banyuwangi, with a lunch break en route. Check in at the hotel.

Day 3: See the panoramic Ijen Crater–Bali
Just after midnight see the panoramic of Ijen creater.


Stop at the miner’s shack for a short rest and head back to the hotel for breakfast before the return trip to Bali.

Know before you go

  • - For Ijen activities, you must have a health certificate from the doctor/clinic/hospital the day before the activity takes place. And costs are borne by the customer (approximately IDR 300,000)
  • The accommodation in Bromo will be Cafe Lava Hostel, SM Bromo Hotel, or Grand Whiz Hotel and will depend on availability
  • The accommodation in Banyuwangi (Ijen) will be at Villa Kayon depending on availability
  • All hotels are comfortable and overlook Bromo. They are equipped with sheets, clean running water, and Wi-Fi, and serve continental breakfast
  • Please bring a warm jacket, hiking shoes, a standard mask, and a camera

The tour was excellent. Lots of driving but worth it to see beautiful sites in Java and learn about Indonesian culture that we wouldn’t have known if we stayed in Bali for our entire trip. Our guide was Adi and he strived to make us comfortable the entire time. He bent over backwards and showed us hospitality even with early wake ups and driving over 24hr in a three day period. It was absolutely worth it.
